Nier Automata ep1
I could live with the shonky CGI work if the scenes using it were better directed - the opening part with the aerial battle felt almost comically static. Did like the little post-credit scene with the puppets though, that was cute.
Both can be effective if done right; with that said it's just very difficult for anime to scare me, for comparison I find some games such as Silent Hill or Amnesia the Dark Descent to be scary partly due to the nightmarish audio and imagery; I tend not to get scared of things that look somewhat familiar and Boogiepop uses human (sort of) characters as the monsters, the atmosphere was great in it's own way but it's more what may be lurking within said atmosphere that makes or breaks the potential for media to scare me.By scare do you mean through jumpscares or atmosphere? I went through quite the horror movie phase a few years back and found movies more effective when they built on atmosphere rather than cheap jumpscares. I loved Boogiepop Phantom's atmosphere though and found it more effective than most horror anime.
