If any UK distributor manages to announce a domestic release for Gunbuster before the Discotek release hits, I wouldn't mind waiting. If not, I'll be importing the US one. Though if AL want to do an Ultimate Edition:

I haven't kept many DVDs but I'll never get rid of my Bandai Visual Gunbuster set. Will buy again on Blu-ray.

The slipcover is thick card while the digipak is sturdier chipboard, something I don't think I've seen outside of some old Beez releases.

Anyone else old enough to have bought Kiseki's iffy VHS tapes? I recall they edited out nudity or something from an early episode.

Didn't have the tapes, but got their cheap dvd version, which was dirty vhs transfer complete with tracking at one point, for €5. Can confirm the bath scene is removed, the audio is still there but the video shows the exterior of the ship.

I have the Kiseki DVD, and can back up what @sniper_samurai said.

Kiseki's VHS release was uncensored. It was only in their DVD that they butchered the bath scene in episode 2 by sloppily inserting still frames and slow-motion footage over the nudity. It was a pointless exercise too, since both version ended up with a PG certificate.

I've owned Gunbuster 3 times, and weirdly the Kiseki VHS release is the only one I've been completely happy with so far. As mentioned, Kiseki's DVD was an amateurish travesty, and the US DVD isn't cropped properly, leaving an annoying white line down the side of the screen the whole time. The VHS had the original music for the training scene in episode 1 too, so it's the only completely authentic rendition of the show in English.

^ By an INSYNC coincidence, took some images of that same Gunbuster set today, unsure if to sell. Could've stole your imgs--'tis a pity. Can't recall if I rewatched after acquiring. Own movie ver on blu-ray that apparently butchers the OVA. I hope discotek also acquire Aim for the Ace, aka the non-mecha inspiration for Gunbuster. Full of the same female passun, just about tennis instead; with an equally cool male sensei fella. His line about women pushing themselves to be be more than they are wouldn't go down too well now, though...

...where was I? Oh, yes, discotek. Like Roy said, I mostly wuv them. Slipovers, compact/thin releases perfect for those weary of space-filling tat. And they keep releasing HD cel-porn and, even if it ain't very good like Arion, it does look pretty. Memories was nice to revisit. I'll forever <3 them for City Hunter, one of my favu series, now in HD. I'm much too lazy to rewatch atm but own it I do, along with its naff recent movie. I'd glol if the BBFC had to grade City Hunter for a UK release. That loveable cad; molesting all those women and getting slapped, hahaha.... ha. 'Contains mild sexual assault/possible rape trauma'. That'd go over well.

I'm glad Only You finally has a release date. I wonder how much of a gap there will be between each movie.

Kodocha and Project A-ko are definite purchases too. I like that new cover a lot more than I expected, considering how attached I am to the original one.

The release dates are potentially aggravating for importing though, since anything shipping on 30th November may get caught amongst early Christmas shopping, and A-Ko on 21st December probably won't be worth trying to order until January.

Hope that this is an okay place to ask, I found this forum via Google looking for an answer to this question. Turns out I've been looking for a forum just like this so that's a great find for me, but I still don't have an answer to my question.

I'm looking to buy Lady Oscar The Rose of Versailles Collection. Does anyone know if it plays on UK blu ray players? I also own Night on the Galactic Railroad by Discotek and it does play on my UK player. I am however uncertain if this is universal for all of their releases or just that I got lucky with that one.

Hello! Welcome to the forum.

Can confirm from those who have copies of the Lady Oscar Blu-rays that unfortunately it is region locked to A (US Blu-ray players). A majority of Discotek titles on Blu-ray are region locked with very few exceptions like Night of the Galactic Railroad as you mentioned as well as the City Hunter franchise, Robot Carnival, and School Days.

Ahh that is a shame, but thank you very much for confirming! Is there any reason in particular why those are unlocked? Night on the Galactic Railroad is my all time favourite animated movie so I feel very lucky for that.
I'll have to look into investing into a US-friendly blu ray player.
