Finished Super Sonico (12 Episodes, English dubbed), it was delightful, I also really enjoyed rewatching Batman: Year One, a very powerful piece of filmmaking and all the more impactful IMO for only being an hour long - it's like it's the exact right length for the story it is telling, neither overstuffed or sparse and dull - one of the best OVAs of all time lol :)

Now I'm watching Huntik: Secrets and Seekers (English dubbed), an Italian cartoon of note from the creators of Winx Club (which I have only the most passing familiarity with, but might try to properly watch at some point considering how good Huntik is so far) and I'm a bit over halfway through Season 1 :)

"Ancient Spirits of Evil, etc."

You know a series is well-paced when you don't even realise 22 minutes have passed and find yourself surprised by the end credits kicking in. Not quite what I was expecting but then I don't really know what I was expecting. I just did a bit of a MAL wander from Higurashi since I fancied something in a similar vein and it came down to this, Shiki, Another and Ghost Hound (all of which I imagine I'll get around to in time since they all seem worth watching and should set me up nicely for Monogatari attempt two). So far it seems like a fairly solid, attention holding mystery of the week series with room for growth around emerging larger plot lines, which certainly have me intrigued. In terms of art direction it definitely feels quite "of its time" in both character designs and the subdued colour palette but all of that is appealing to me, it reminds me of other things I like.

As for the characters, Kujo's a somewhat disappointingly generic schoolboy protagonist, elevated a bit by his fish-out-of-water status as a Japanese student in Europe, making him weird by virtue of being normal (which would have been particularly true in the 1920s when the show is set, I imagine). Victorique's Sherlock Holmes inspirations are not exactly subtle, but of all the ways they could have gone with a particularly intelligent and aloof young girl character it's nice they didn't just make her a total tsundere b*tch and gave her a bit more nuance and quiet frustration (and quite often it feels, having her consider whether it's even worth her while to react to something at all. I like that). I do wonder if they've perhaps made her a bit too clever for anything to ever present much of an obstacle, but I'm hopeful that might change as she has to face more personal challenges. Oh, and I hate Grevil's stupid hair that does not fit in with the art style at all.

Replied to this over in the General Cartoons Thread (just trying to do my bit to keep the "Anime & Manga" section of the forum on-topic).

Being a big softie sometimes, I particularly liked that the troubles that Happened with First Astronomical Velocity and their concert were solved by friendships and earlier good deeds. And Granny.
After reading a book on the Japanese Gravure and Porn Industry, the early episode where Sonico is pressured to go further than she wants is sadly true.
Fortunately, she has a quality manager.

Ranma 1/2 (2024) ep3-5

I am warming to the Ranmake as it goes on, I just wish it was a bit more ambitious. The business of Ranma’s missing nipples seems to have ruffled a few feathers? Personally, I agree that nothing of value has been lost, but I do think it would be less distracting if they reframed the shots so that nudity is implied and not shown, rather than just omitting them altogether and making Ranma look like a shop mannequin. Hell, I think it’d be funnier if there was constantly something conveniently blocking the camera’s view.

Dan Da Dan ep7-8

Haven’t had much to say about it on an episode to episode basis, but I’ve enjoyed Dan Da Dan a lot so far. Ep7 was certainly a change of pace though, it felt like it wouldn’t have been out of place in Paranoia Agent.

Ghost Cat Anzu

A pleasant film about Garfield Anzu, the titular talking cat who cheated death, finding himself pushed into the role of surrogate parent to Karin, a young girl visiting her family’s Buddhist shrine, this is probably most notable for its extensive use of rotoscoping to create Anzu’s animation, making him surprisingly expressive for a big goofy orange cat. Unfortunately, I think the film suffers a little when he isn’t the focus of the action. It doesn’t strike me as the fun, heartwarming family outing some people are painting it as (I’m not alone in saying some story beats imply something far darker going on just outwith the characters’ immediate orbit) and it also shifts gears in the third act to introduce higher stakes I’m not convinced it really needed. The trip to the underworld in search of Karin’s dead mother allows for some interesting visuals, sure, but I feel like if they were going to do that, it would have been better to make that the focus of the film from the start. Honestly, I liked it better when Anzu was getting busted for traffic violations and losing all his money at pachinko. And why is Karin’s mother in hell anyway?

It’s possible I might enjoy it more on a second watch, now that I know better what to expect, but yeah, dunno.

The nipless used to be quite common in anime, didn’t they? I always presumed it was one of those strange quirks of Japanese censorship (like the mosaic, or miniature black bar) that had been dispensed with in modern times, but perhaps it’s still the case that bare boobs are fine for kids as long as they’re freakishly anatomically incorrect.
