I'd say it was a good show that elevated itself to great with the way it ended. But they've recently decided to go and ruin that, so I may have to adjust my opinion of it depending on what they decide to do.
I personally think the writing on Code Geass is excellent, and I rate the writing on R2 as actual genius. I mean, the shocks! The shifting allegiances!
I certainly didn't expect that Diethard would...
end up turning against Zero.
And that Suzaku would...
actually align himself with Lelouch! (And be dubbed 'Knight of Zero', a title that surpasses even that of the Knight of One and marks him out as Zero's personal guard.)
And all for perfectly understandable and legitimate reasons. There's nothing far-fetched about any of it. Sure, the tone of the show itself is gloriously OTT, but the writers knew very well what they were doing; you only need to watch the episode commentaries to understand that.
And then we learn the ultimate aim of Zero Requiem... What an ending.
I haven't gotten through it yet without tears. I hope I never do!
