Goodbye, Don Glees!

This was a pretty standard coming of age story, one that has been told many times and as a genre film didn't do anything new. Some of the messages the film was trying to get across where done so in a fairly heavy handed way at times as well yet I have to say the film, as a whole, did tell its story quite well and I quite enjoyed it, it had some proper funny moments and was appropriately moving when it needed to be..

Lazarus - Episodes 1 - 10

I'm a bit late to this, but was waiting for a subbed version to be available and wanted to finish Treasure Island first. Man, this just wants to be Cowboy Bebop 2 right down to the opening's visuals, the music and Axel as a character. I think there is a decent underlying story here somewhere that has been squandered by bad and lazy writing. It will be interesting to see how it concludes.

Which Hunter X Hunter series are you watching? 1999 or 2011? Have you seen Yu Yu Hakusho? :)

2011! It was the one people recommended the most because it covered all the fan favourite arcs and had a more definitive ending. But I’ve waited so long to get through it that now 1999 has been getting a reappraisal and being better at handling the YorkNew stuff (which is what I’m at now).

There is a charm to Hunter X Hunter being such a 1990s series (Killwa is cool because he has a skateboard and a guy having a laptop is a big deal) being animated in a modern style. But that style has also been pretty flat, though this arc is definitely prettier. So I’m sure there’s merit to both.

I’m a big fan of YuYu Hakusho and I’m hoping to watch it through again some day. Part of why I’ve given HxH the 40 episodes is because I’m sure it’ll kick into high gear eventually because YuYu did the same.

Fire Force S3
Episodes 6-12
My only criticism would be the fight with Burns went on too long. I'm not a fan of multi episode fights.

I also watched Fire Force Season 3 (Part One) while it was airing. I’d agree the first few episodes are the weakest and then Episodes 7-12 are great. The anime is really hit-and-miss adapting the fights but really excels while adapting the manga’s thriller elements. And the back half comes with a lot of very small but clever changes to make the story flow much better compared to the source material.

Lots of laughs and a decent plot.

Hunter X Hunter (2011) Episodes 40 - 55 - It’s nice to just watch a chunk of a long series over the weekend sometimes. This arc is still fun. A violent mafia drama with superpowers is a fun twist to formula. Togashi making Gon’s entire storyline about how much of a pain in the neck it is to find second-hand collectibles is relatable. Overall the arc has an almost amoral framing. It’ll let villains and heroes have the same amount of introspection and let events play out without much concern for suspense.

It stilll has the habit of over-explaining things though. As much as I like Kurapika a bizarre amount of time has been spent on explaining he can fight with his chain but most of its powers are locked behind his mood and his strongest ability can only be used on Phantom Troupe members. Maybe it's a fault in the English dub but it feels like the first time this is explained was a lot clearer and straightforward than all the other times Kurapika goes the topic.

Lazarus - Episodes 11 - 13 [Final]

The ending to Lazarus was sing-posted long before it came round, its not so much that Lazarus is bad in the sense of being any way funny bad, it's just so dull and incredibly unimaginative that you wonder just what box ticking exercise was actually going on during the production planning phase....

...but there is a joke in the final minutes of the final episode that I imagine (would almost bet on) no-one picked up on, but as someone who hero worshipped Nigel Mansell from the mid 80's to the mid 90's it almost made forgive the whole thing.....almost!

Super Electromagnetic Robot Combattler V - Episode 1 - 3

Starting my rewatch of the Robot Romance Trilogy now that I've seen Brave Raideen. It's fairly standard super robot fare so far, but episode 3 does highlight why I love 70's super robot anime.

Grand Blue Season 2 episode 6 Pickup mission.
