Been very lax recently, also busy, hence I've not had a lot of time to watch let alone comment on anything, but I did (re)start GE 999, since I forgot where I got up to and I don't think I was paying a right lot of attention the first time.

Galaxy Express 999 (TV) Episodes 1-6
So we're six episodes in and while the movie re-jigs events somewhat, about half the events of the first movie have already occurred, some even having what feels like less time devoted to them Claire particularly, what the Hell? In the movie her relationship with Tetsuro and her sacrifice for him feels important but in the show, they've literally known each other for about five minutes before she sacrifices herself and Tetsuro mourns her like she was some life-long friend. Considering the series is 113 episodes long, I'm intrigued to see where exactly this will go. I kinda wish it wasn't quite so episodic in nature, I was expecting certain plot threads to be more fleshed out in the series because of the obvious extended running time, but it turns out they still need to be crammed into 20 minute episodes. As was the style at the time, I suppose.

I still love Matsumoto's design work - Even if all his female characters do look pretty much exactly the same and Tetsuro looks somewhat hideous in the series (though I don't discount the possibility that's intentional, it would probably give him even more drive to desire a mechanical body and you don't really see a lot of ugly anime characters, at least not good guys) I do very much enjoy the strange mixture of old and new that is the GE999 universe, with its elements of steampunk and cyberpunk without really being either.

Thought I'd break up GE999 with a bit of World Misery Masterpiece Theatre, since I enjoyed Alps Story: My Annette a little while back. Geez, and people think we get a lot of child suffering in today's anime. Probably one of the more cynical takes on humanity I've seen a while. The moral of the story so far seems to be that everyone will bend over backwards for you if you're fabulously wealthy and kick you to the curb if you're poor, and being a nice person has little to no effect. Also the middle classes spend their time fawning over their betters waiting for an opportunity to screw them over and take their place or hoping to get trickled down on and the working classes just want someone lower than them to kick. Actually this all seems quite well observed, clearly not much has changed in the past hundred years.

Horrible self-serving caricatures though almost every adult in this show might be, at least some of the kids are slightly more interesting. The fact that Sara is rich and spoilt but isn't a total brat and is instead one of the nicest characters is kind of refreshing, usually stories like this of wealthy people who've known nothing else ending up dirt poor have them learn a lesson about being better people or something, however that's clearly not a lesson Sara needs to learn. But I am interested to learn what the point of the story is exactly, if it ends up being "virtue is rewarded" after all this unbridled cynicism it's going to feel a bit jarring. But then I guess the children, relatively innocent as they are (except Lavinia, who I feel ambivalent towards because despite her needless cruelty and petty jealousy, she's also the only character savvy enough to see through all the adults' bull****) are going to be the heart of the story - Sara's ability to transcend class boundaries and genuinely care for people (in a way almost no-one else in her world seems to) is leading somewhere.

That all said, Princess Sara has still hooked me with its drama, aesthetic and pleasant pacing just the same way Annette did, so I feel like I might get a lot of mileage out of these shows in the coming years.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Ep 1-8
My friend recommended this to me, so I thought I'd give it a go. Solid so far. Enjoying it. Nezuko deserves all the head pats in the world.

Persona 4 the Animation (dubbed) Ep 1-14
Another recommendation from another friend and we watched some of it together (they like the dub so we went for that version instead)
