Only problem I've ever had burning homemade dvds is that I always used good quality blanks, on the few times I didn't they'd usually fail (go bad) and become unreadable. That was back in the days when Netflix rented dvds, there was a popular term that described that-"burn and return". It was a cheap way to increase your anime library when anime dvds were expensive to buy. I also downloaded fansubs and used a program to make dvds from them like the one in the picture.

Fist of the North Star (2026) ep1
Okay, deep breaths. You really can’t talk about this one without talking about the CGI. It certainly doesn’t look great; the decision to use hard black shadows all the time on the character models is broadly accurate to the look of the manga, but just looks weird in 3D. More often than not, it doesn’t feel as if the characters and backgrounds exist in the same space, presumably because the lighting doesn’t match properly.
It’s not a complete wash though - I would even go as far as to say it looks pretty good during the fight scenes. During the main action sequence of the episode, the lighting changed to a kind of high contrast, washed out look that feels a lot more in keeping with the character art. Maybe if they’d just stuck with that all the way through, they’d have been on to something. As it is, it feels comparable with the CG used in the opening for Stardust Crusaders, which was good for its time, but we’ve just had a second season of Trigun Stampede, and that, for all its other problems, really showed what you could achieve with TV-level CGI anime.
The real heartbreaker, I think, is just that, if you were going to remake this series, the obvious thing to do would have been to get David Pro. Perhaps in 2050, once Steel Ball Run is finished, our all-powerful cyborg overlords might let them have a go.

Dorohedoro s1 (rewatch, English dub) ep4-12 + OVA
Well that went down easy - didn’t think I’d finish rewatching the first season so quickly, but my enthusiasm for the show remains un diminished. I think what really makes Dorohedoro is the sheer charm of its characters; in another series, just about any of the main cast here could have been the protagonist. The OVA is a fun addition too. It may not advance the plot any, but damn it, we needed the story of the Invisible Gyoza Fairy.
Ruri Rocks ep1-2
Looking back on it, I don’t think I actually watched that many new series last year. I do remember this one being fairly well received, but fear I may have dismissed it as a meme, given the popularity of the uh, particularly buxom geology student who acts as a guide to the main character as she goes looking for precious minerals in the countryside. Some of the music choices feel a bit unnecessarily dramatic (half expected Frieren’s party to rock up), but this seems quite a pleasing little series really. Maybe not something to watch a lot of in one sitting, but a sweet and very well animated palate cleanser.
