WTFDM's Ultimate Thoughts On Naruto... so far

So after watching about ...um... probably 45 episodes or so of Naruto i've decided to post my thoughts on the series.

The main problem I have with the series is that almost every episode has a five minute recap showing what happened in the last episode(though that seems to have calmed down a bit now), pointlessly dragging out the series more than it needs to be. With every four or five episodes an entire episodes worth of time has been just wasted.

Another thing that was irritating was the constant showing of the scene but with semi transparent close ups of the characters heads layered over the top and if Adult Swim did one thing right it was to get rid of those stupid shock lines. I just see them as comedy after seeing Cromartie High. Everytime somebody says or does something 'shocking' they JUST HAVE TO show the expression of every single character that's around at the time.

Yet another problem is that the animation seemed very inconsistant with obvious attempts to save money for the 'main fight' rather than spreading the budget over the span of ... whatever episodes they get the budget for. The animation quality could go from movie standards to dirt and then back to being about what you'd expect from the average anime.

I guess the most damning thing would be that I didn't like a some of the main characters to begin with. Particually Sakura and Sasuke. Sakura did pretty much nothing but shout and cry throughout the entire first story arc and Sasuke is your annoying all growed up kid that does things like a big boy should and tries to act like a badass all the time(Though i've warmed to him slightly now). I think the first time Sakura did anything useful wasn't up until episode 25(that's about a whole standard series). I think Sasuke summed it up when he shouted "SAKURA! DO SOMETHING!" while he's pretty much being killed and she's just stood around shouting "SASUKE SASUKE!". Sakura is actually beginning to show signs of hope now though.

But away from the bad points of the series. Let's see why i'm still watching it if I have so many problems with it. Well for one it's a series you can just watch in the background. You don't have to think about what's going on a lot of the time and you'll still understand it. I do like some of the characters, thankfully one of them being the main character(Naruto, duh!), Kakashi and the connection between the 'bad guys' in the first arc(Haku and Zabuza) managed kept me interested and continue to watch. Rock Lee, a character I thought I was going to instantly hate has kinda surprised me. I actaully like him! Setting aside his funny for 5 minutes design he seems like a decent character. I'm liking Hinata and Shikamaru too. I hope they get some solid episodes based on them in the near future.

When the Churin exam arc started up my interest began to waver again but little things kept me watching and finally something really concrete seems to have kicked in with the arrival of Ochimaru(forgive me if I didn't get the name right).Again it's just managed to keep me watching as it was hanging by a thread.

Right now i'm at the part where they are battling against each other to see who will be in the final exam. the fights are a bit dragged out and I'm not holding them that high really but i'm hoping this Ochimaru guy will burst in and revive me again at some point within the next few episodes.

Overall it's a decent series in many ways. Fun at times, annoyingly cliche at others. Dragged out to the max but still entertaining. In the end it's just a good show to watch while I'm doing work on the PC. There are too many flaws for me to just sit down with the sole intention of just watching it though, I have to be doing something else while watching it.

I've probably forgot some things but meh there you have it. Naruto! In the eyes of your pal, WTFDaveMustaine.

so in otherwords it's like DBZ where a 5 minute battle spans 15 episodes :)
In this case it seems to be mainly due to the fact that there's usually a loong review of the last episode at the beginning. That's usually around the 4 minute mark. Add the OP and Ed and Preview on top of that and that's another 3 minutes and 30 seconds down. So in the end out of a roughly 24 minute episode there's only about 16 and a half minutes of new footage.

Oh yeah, I forgot that mid episode there is usually several flashbacks on how they nearly beat somebody explaining it through and various other flashbacks of less important things that seem pretty irrelevant to what's happening. So that's another few minutes down.

I'm trying to come up with a list of stuff I like about Naruto, but given I love everything about this show, any kind of attempt to honestly critisize it would come off badly. I know its fairly formulaic, I know it shares the trappings of many of classic Shounen Jump anime but still... I just like it too much, right down to how the characters perform their ninja hand seals to evoke certain techniques, the church organ Orochimaru theme tune, the pop-punk opening themes with movie quality & experimental animation, the way Rock Lee pulls out some crazy martial arts. It's just too fun and enthralling.

Naruto is definately very stretched. Even with using up 25% of each episode on recap, extending out back-story episodes, and skimping on animation everywhere except where it counts, they still felt it necessary to pad the series out with what is looking like nearly 2 full years of absolute filler.

Its a real good show, but when it drags .....

Well I have a lot of work to do on the PC this week so there's going to be a fair bit of Naruto in the background. I just hope the Ochimaru guy makes a reappearance pretty soon and drags them out of these mediocre one on one fights. I have a feeling that from what i've heard about the filler arcs that I will be giving up on the series not long after I hit them.

i'm in the same seat as Paul. its a cool show but like almost all long running anime shows, it has its flaws.

What I see with Naruto is it has way too many flashbacks. =|
An animated Lost .

Well now i've seen up to the filler arcs. And i've got to say I only got to this point so quickly was because I was fast forwarding through a lot of episodes. The best parts of the series are the backstorys of some of the characters (especially Sasuke. I have no idea why Naruto likes him though, he's a complete dick). The fights were annoying with the fact that you knew what was going to happen. You think the fight is finally over when the bad guy levels up AGAIN! *yawn* I was skipping through these to get to the more interesting backstorys splashed about everywhere.

There is no need for 135 epsiodes to get to this point though, it could have been done in about 70 and probably be a better series because of it. Since nothing plotwise or characterwise is apparently not gonna happen that's the end of Naruto for me. It was an average experience but I can't say it was total devoid of entertainment.

Now onto a series that looks excellent! Master Keaton!

It seems to be hit and miss alot with naruto. Some of the fights and animations can be outstanding, yet as you've stated the flashbacks tend to be annoying and repeated. I guess they're just trying to parade each character and give them some backbone.
I really enjoy naruto (and the films!) but the current fillers are a bit on the dull side, but least were not watching 10 "Power up" episodes like we did in Dragonball Z and that theres different storys to keep the viewers going.

Let me just clear this up.

By flashbacks I mean showing clips of things that happened only minutes ago(or the last episode) for long periods of time. Not the backstory elements.

Naruto at first great show then it started to drag on and on and on some more 170 onwards just became fillers 30 episodes of random episodes which have nothing to do with the story.

But in saying that still some funny episodes

Don't worry about it dude fillers are finally over and should be getting back to Sasuke Orochimaru thread again.... DO NOT WATCH UK TV VERSION it'll kill the series for you its so awful theres just no way to justify what they did to the series
