WitchBlade Discussion

Right, as the next two weeks where left blank, i thought it best to try and get in another of the titles people suggested, and after a random selection, we get Witchblade. So here we go.

I've never actually looked too much into it myself, however i have had it recommended to me a few times. If i can find the first volume at a reasonable price(since money is lacking for me at present) i'll go and buy it.

I sitll need to finish this series off, hopefully i'll be able to find the last volumes soon enough. Still a bit disappointed that MVM didn't do boxset just containing the last three vols like they did with the first three vols.

It's a good show, a surprise from what i was expecting.

Gack, I'll have to change my avatar later :)

I grabbed the free episode 1 of Witchblade on iTunes when it was up. Aside from the dub making me want to cry, I was pleasantly surprised and ended up buying the discs.

It's unusual because all of the ingredients - fanservice, reimagining of a comic series, Gonzo - give it every excuse to completely suck, yet it's remarkably interesting and well produced. My only complaint is that I didn't like the ending; it wasn't a bad ending but I would have preferred something else.

I could see people who don't like fanservice being rather put off as there is absolutely loads of it. It would almost be a waste if there hadn't been with such bountiful Uno character designs. Rest assured though that even in spite of this the series has more character development and content than a lot of higher profile shows and it's well worth checking out.

I don't see how the ending could have been anything else given how the series and the characters developed. But I guess you are supposed to wish for any other ending than that, that's the whole point.

I too was prepared to loathe this when I first saw it. Gonzo, fan service, futuristic sci-fi action with dark conspiracy. It seemed like Gonzo by numbers. But, it managed to avoid the usual character overload, It didn't have their typical conclusion where all the characters show up for an action cameo. It had a great story, and more importantly it had themes and a message that it stuck to and developed throughout. It was character focused more than eyecandy focused to a degree where I even began to tune the fanservice out.

Great series. Aside from dodgy animation, everything worked well.

Anyone know if a boxset has been announced?

It was a good ending. Seeing as Masane was going to die anyway, it ended pretty well. No that is not a spoiler because she finds out early on.

Good ending =/= happy ending

Maxon: I agree, the occasional meaningful ending is better than a sweet one with no impact. I was still rooting for them though. Poor Rihoko. It was frustrating that one of the few series from Gonzo with characters I actually liked at the time was also one which viciously ruined most of their lives too.

Cloaked it paranoidly because I think it still is a bit of a spoiler for people who haven't even see it ;)

The boxset is coming out during October http://www.anime-on-line.com/xcart/prod ... 227&page=1

Must say that Witchblade is one of my favourite shows. It could have ended up purely for fanservice but the second part certainly did peak the interest. I think the ending was right

Its just a shame it couldnt have been a happy ending. I thought it was very emotional in the last few episodes, especially in her trying out her daughters food and finding she lost her taste...now that was a heartbreaker if there ever was one

I think Gonzo did a terrific job on Witchblade especially when you consider that the source material they were working from was foreign(ie an American comic book) as opposed to to the usual source of anime (japanese manga).
Their take on the Witchblade legend was very good.Granted, both the covers and the first few episodes could put a lot of people off with their displays of fanservice but if you stick with all the way through as most people on this thread seem to have done, then you be rewarded with a show that really does develop the characters and storyline right up to the end.
A case in point are my two favourite moments in Witchblade which occur near the end of the series and have absolutely nothing to do with action or fanservice. The first scene shows Masane going into a warehouse hoping to use the equipment inside to destroy or remove the witchblade from herself and her acceptance at the end that there is only one way the witchblade will leave her. The second scene is the one between Masane and Riku taling in the park and Masane is trying to explain to her daughter why she may not be around for much longer.
This is one series that Gonzo got the core characters down to a tee especially the dynamic between Masane and Riku throughout the series. As for the boxsets ,their is a region 1 boxset already out for about £30 but of course you could wait for the region 2 set .Either way it will be money well spent.

I've only watched the first nine episodes, but I've enjoyed it so far. Not the greatest thing ever, but a fun enough action series with some good fanservice

Need to get volumes 4,5 and 6 (I have the first three already).
