Winter Streaming Announcements

They did a similar thing with Sukitte Ii na Yo last season. They got the show about 5 episodes in, added the most recent first, then added the older ones. Not to mention they got Nisemonogatari long before Bake...

The only way to tell with FUNimation is whether their YouTube videos are unlocked. They have started doing simulcasts on YouTube again this season, although all have been locked thus far. The trailer for Hetalia is locked so not looking good.

Crunchyroll Adds Season One of "AKB0048" to Anime Catalog

Earlier this month, Crunchyroll began streaming AKB0048: next stage, the second season of the anime inspired by Japan’s number one idol act. Now, the first season of AKB0048 will be joining Crunchyoll’s catalog as well.

Says Crunchyroll’s announcement:

AKB0048 will be launching this Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 7:30am PST, the same time that new episodes of AKB0048: next stage are launched. 2-3 episodes will be made available each week, for both free and premium users!

Story

“At the start of the 21st century, an interplanetary war broke out. Earth's ecosystem was severely damaged, and humanity was forced to flee the planet. On several planets of this new society, things that ‘disturb the heart’ like music and art are forbidden.

Before the people called ‘Idols’ fell into ruin, the legendary idol group AKB48 is resurrected as the interplanetary troupe AKB0048, made up of girls who carry on the title and spirit of the original members. Held as heroines by some and labeled as terrorists by others, they must take up arms to bring their music to their fans wherever they are.”

As with the second season, the territories are U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, South and Central America.

Crunchyroll Adds "GJ Club" Anime to Winter Lineup

A new series is kicking off on Crunchyroll this week, with the addition of GJ Club to the winter 2013 streaming lineup. Episodes will debut every Wednesday at 11:00 am Pacific Time starting on February 20. GJ Club kicks off this week for premium members with episode 7, which free members can check out on February 27. The first six episodes will arrive at a later date.

GJ Club will be available to folks in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

Based on the light novels written by Shin Araki and Illustrated by Aruya, GJ Club (GJ-bu) is directed by Yoshiyuki Fujiwara (episodes of Blue Exorcist and Guilty Crown, key animation on YuruYuri), with series composition by Hideaki Koyasu (Akikan!, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan: Demon Capital) and animation production by Dogakobo (YuruYuri, Mangirl!). Here's Crunchyroll's synopsis:

The story centers around a high school student named Kyoya Shinomiya, who has been forced to join a club at his high school, called GJ-bu (Good Job). There, he meets the four unique female members of the club, Mao Amatsuka, Shion Sumeragi, Megumi Amatsuka, and Kirara Bernstein. From then on, he becomes dragged into their antics and interactions that take place in the club.

So what ended up not getting streamed on either AoD or Crunchyroll this season? Funi kept Haganai to themselves, that is the only show on my to watch list that I can't see in an entirely straight-forward manner.

FUNi also have Puchim@s, Minami-ke, Senran Kagura and the continuing Psycho Pass.
What's really annoying is that you can see the original Haganai on FUNi's YouTube, but not the sequel.

Funi have Hetalia too, and nobody ever did get JoJo for some reason. We're not allowed to watch Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman either.

I'd settle for them allowing subscriptions from regions where they have permissions, or at least opening them up on YouTube again.
It's not stepping on Manga's toes when they have no streaming service of their own and have indeed pointed people to FUNimation's YouTube channel in the past.

Youtube's website is a mess - I would prefer for them to be open on Funi's own site or make use of Anime On Demand.

I assume their shows were unlocked on YouTube but locked on their own site since on YT they can leave the monetising to Google rather than having to source adverts - which is why I had hopes for the premium service when it was initially announced.
I've watched a few simulcasts on YouTube (Aria, Campanella, DenYuuDen, Ookami-san etc.) and re-watched Haganai (it was simulcast locked on N2, and only uploaded unlocked to YouTube later). For a couple of seasons they stopped putting simulcasts on YouTube at all but now they are going it again they are all locked (whether they only have US rights or there is some new policy I don't know).
It certainly would be nice if AoD could make good on it's promises of bringing stuff from UK licensees other than Kaze.
