Not entirely true.

It doesn't work on any of the current UK channels.

If there was a cult entertainment channel with loads of stuff like Adult Swim stuff, MST3k, Old Martial arts movies. Y'know, cool stuff. It would work.

You could start with anime set in Britain, so maybe Hellsing, but the amount of violence in it might make it unsuitable for broadcast.

I really don't think setting is the issue =P I think it needs to be something accessible to a UK audience, something people will "get" quickly, without too much anime weirdness i.e. probably rule out most comedy series. I really think something like Death Note is the ideal starter: it's a concept rooted in a genre people are familiar with (detective/ crime thriller) it's generally fairly serious, no chibi-faces or zany weirdness (outside of the shinigami aspect) and it's something that will keep people watching with the show's structure as it is.

I really think if any anime has a chance over here it's Death Note

Not with the newspapers in this country. As soon as they found out about the "manga murders" most broadcasters would be too scared to show it for fear of being attacked by Disgusted of Tumbridge Wells.

it used to be.

what series do you think that would do well on sales on region 2dvd

Exactly.

I'd love to see something like Moribito, Death Note, Gankutsuou, Monster, Stand Alone Complex, given the chance to garner a cult following a la Aeon Flux or whatever on some smaller channel, but it isn't realistically happening any time soon.

The only cartoons that are really shown here are comedies. Japanese comedy is very different from UK/US. I don't think they would do well.

On the kids side of things it's all been done before; Pokémon, DBZ, Cardcaptors.

I remember the Sc-Fi channel used to show Bubblegum Crisis, Excel Saga, Outlaw Star and other series late at night. We've had CNX, Toonami, Anime channel. It's all been done before, anime just doesn't work over here.

Not exactly.

CNX - They took the wrong approach, which is why they rebranded as Toonami.

Toonami - Actually did pretty well, until they lost DBZ and relied on smaller shows such as One Piece. Which, isn't the UK's problem. The same thing happened in the US.

AnimeCentral - CSTV's channels are partially funded by phone in contests. That works for music channels, because music is cheap and attracts more viewers who have it on in the background.

ok but which ones would work on dvd if it was region 2
Are you asking what shows should be licensed in the UK?

Don't know. Most new things worth licensing already are.

i mean-
look at a few series that haven't been released over hereeither you have them region 1 or haven't seen them yet but has heard positive reviews on them or there your type of series but in your opinion would sell well.

I think any anime would sell well on DVD in the UK.

Most anime fans are hardcore collectors.
The problem the UK has at the moment is the divide between people who want blu-rays and people who want DVDs.

As for TV, I think anything Sci-fi/Acton based would do fine. As other people have said, cant have too many Japanese Culture References. Stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop and Ninja Scrolls

@Yrag86 why cant we have japanese culture references,

anyways the blu-ray + dvd combo are a good idea for two reasons

1 if you have only a dvd player but thinking of getting a blu-ray player one day then you dont have to worry about getting the blu-ray discs cause you already have it

2 blu-ray and dvd combo might stop people from being divided

also i know anime fans are hard core collectors but im talking about region 1,3 and 4 that would do well over here that hasn't been released

Japanese Culture references are fine for DVDs as the people that buy anime, either already know them, or are happy to find out about them.

I was talking about getting Anime on Mainstream UK Telly, If you stuck a anime on with too many Culture references, first time viewers are most likely going to get confused and annoyed.
As TV is all about viewer ratings, last thing you want is a bunch of people of people switching off half way thru a program because they dont understand whats going on.
