Where to start with the following series?

Forests, snow, fjords and ladies for me. =P

I've never really seem a fjord, but on those "Visit Norway" posters they have on the tube. It looks really amazing though.

PATLABOR SHIRT! Wish I was able to get merchandise like that. Luck of the draw, one assumes.

Alas all Uniqlo stores are in and around the Capital, which means none in the north, nor Scandinavia for that matter. Pick one up, Chaos!

I got round to watching Patlabor The Movie 2 this weekend. This time, I switched the dialogue to Japanese with subtitles and because I knew what to expect in terms of story/structure I enjoyed it a lot more. The second film has a lot more of Gotoh in it than the first and he's a much more interesting character than the annoying kids who are the focus in the first movie! (Although I did watch that dubbed, I deffo need to go back to it now). I have to say that I thought the animation, character design and the whole look of the film was much improved over the first. I think you can see the beginnings of what the director went on to achieve with Ghost in the Shell.

Still, strange that I enjoyed this a lot more than the first when the genereal consensus seems to be the complete opposite....

Agreement here, I thought the 2nd Patlabor film was a vast improvement on the first.

The animation is of a higher standard, the shift of focus onto Gotoh is a welcome one and the plot is more complex and intriguing. I know a lot of people hate it for similar reasons to most of Oshii's work (slow pacing, large amounts of exposition, lack of action) but I really wasn't bothered by such issues. It's not a perfect film, but it seems to recieve some unreasonably harsh criticism.

Patlabor T? I haven't seen patlabor yet as I have too many anime in my backlog. (and just adding 50 Urusei yatsura volumes as well)

I can get for you guys for when we meet at Leeds. (I'm stil to confirm the gig date and venue though)

And yet another bump for this 'lil thread of mine.

For this month's anime fix, I'm thinking about picking up the original Gundam movies as reccomended by Black Wolf!

As for gundam, there's multiple start points, if you don't mind watching dated animation then go for the first three compliation movies, the ones that chronicle the Mobile Suit Gundam 43 ep series. If you want to see something newer though then i suggest starting with Gundam 00 then going back to the earlier stuff.

Is it possible to get them in a boxed set version? (I like pretty boxes if possible). Was looking at getting them from Play.com.

http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/3271563/ ... oduct.html

I realise these came out in the late very 70's/early 80's so the animation will be dated, but I rather like the appeal of that.

At that price, I'd recommend it. Each film is housed in its own keep case, the three being contained in a nice box. The DVD menus are in French, but the films themselves didn't fail to satisfy. Wait 'till you get to the bit with the swan.

Edit: Terminology has been corrected.

I'm pretty sure you don't mean "jewel cases" there Zin5ki... Jewel cases are the hard plastic ones with actual hinges like CD cases. They're very nice (frankly I wish every DVD came in those) but also very rarely used, and I doubt that Gundam set makes use of them. That is a good price though, I'd say go for it.

Thanks guys, gonna order this now!

EDIT: Ordered Gundam...it's out of stock. What's the dealio here, do Play usually get more in to sell or have I missed it at this price? Says delivery time is 1-2 weeks.

Regards

K

Play will usually source more from their suppliers. It's a Beez release so shouldn't be as hard to find as some things and it will probably be with you within their estimate.

If you're worried you could drop the question into the Beez thread and find out direct from the source whether it's due another production run or if there's stock out there ;)

Hey Rui, cheers for that. I'll hold on for now and see what happens. It's only a couple of weeks and I have my Akira manga to tide me over in the meantime.

Quick update for this thread:

Gundam still hasn't been dispatched from Play.com.

However, I have just purchased the Evangelion tin box set....

How's the price for that tin these days? £70 was the lowest R2 price I could find it for last winter. Fortunately, I received it as a gift.

You can get it for about £48 from Play/Amazon at the moment.

Really looking forward to seeing NGE as I know next to nothing about it, apart from how popular it is.

I'll be staying out of any related threads/websites until I've watched the whole thing.
