What We Watched…and was it any good? Winter Season 2022 Overview

Surprised no one mentioned Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc, maybe because it started in December so technically a Autumn show, but the majority of it was in Winter. Yes, half of season was taken up by the same fight albeit with multiple stages, but the animation was off the chart and even, for my money, beat Mugen Train!
Other shows I rated highly, but not mentioned was Teasing Master Takagi-san s3 which saw our protagonists get even closer to admitting their feelings without playing games and Akebi's Sailor Uniform, which despite some questionable scenes, was a pretty chill SOL with some very pretty artwork.

Personally, I think it's hard to justify talking about a mammoth like Demon Slayer compared to the new shows people are less familiar with, at least that's usually my line of thumb when making selections (unless it's something I am totally obsessed with!). And like ya say, I think starting in the Autumn meant we didn't talk about it in the previous Winter article to come back to it either. :)

I really enjoyed Akebi's Sailor Uniform too, so I'm happy to see it found other fans too despite the reputation it quickly got thanks to that opening episode.

I failed to contribute (oops) but really enjoyed the last season of Demon Slayer, the wait for new episodes is painful but it's such a masterwork at showing how a shounen show can flourish with a high quality adaptation. It feels like forever ago that it ended already!

I'm thinking now that maybe we need an extra round-up of the series like the Entertainment Arc that don't quite fall into one season or another (this would probably include Netflix series too as they often don't fit the traditional seasonal parameters)... 🤔

With my tastes in anime - preferring mature, serious, and/or dark dramas, and avoiding comedy, shonen, sports, CGDCT, yuri/yaoi, and most mecha, I found only a few anime of interest in this past Winter season. The ones I did watch and enjoy this season, but actually still haven't finished ( I generally don't watch complete series via streaming, and wait for a Blu-ray release):

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom Season 2
Love of Kill
Police in a Pod

I haven't been following Attack on Titan only because I still haven't finished Season 2 yet(!). 86 I just haven't checked out, so not sure if I would care for it or not. My Dress up Darling I dropped after episode 2 because the male MC acted like a total wuss-ass through the entire episode. Not much else in the Winter slate looked to be of any interest to me.

It's been panned pretty heavily, from what I've read online, but I have been enjoying it. Her surviving that car crash in episode 2 was totally unbelievable, but it didn't upset me like it seemed to do with some people. But then, I generally prefer anime everyone else seems to dislike, lol...

I had no idea people were panning it. I admittedly bounced off of Volume 1 of the manga when that first came out, but I was interested in the premise enough to watch the anime. Now I'm completely sold on the whole series and bought up the rest of the manga that's currently available...

Reading your comment there @Girls with Guns, it's true that a lot of the series can be unbelievable in how things pan out and the general survival rates of the main characters. It never really bothered me either, likely because I didn't even think about it. I was far more interested in seeing the leads interact and finding out more about them. It's the strength of their relationship which made me appreciate it more as time went on, so I'm glad the anime managed to capitalise on that front since the manga having short volumes (especially that first one), was an issue for it imo.
