Sound of the Sky and Kids on the Slope got my votes. Neither looked like much to me before I watched them, but both ended up being really really great shows.

Yup, I concur with most of the opinions expressed here. Sound of the Sky and Kids on the Slope are 'must watch' anime imo. My third choice would be Another, which should make a good change of pace after the other two.
