what characters would you choose to represent anime

Well put Rui! I agree that it definately felt like the series ended earlier than it did, which is why I was satisfied with the ending also. Near was good but I was always going to prefer L, even if he did get outsmarted in the end.

It wasn't so much outsmarting even, Light kinda cheated. there was no way L could know that Rem would sacrifice herself for Misa

Ah Well, to be fare it's been 3 years since I watched the series and even longer since I read the manga so my memory lacks in parts. =P

My first move would be to not have Superman at the front.

I would have Goku and Yui from K-ON! and probably leave it at that.

(Death Note spoilers)

In a way, if you stop reading at the climax you can have it one way and treat the rest as a 'what if?', and if you continue you can see the rest and enjoy seeing Light gets his just desserts.
Ah man, I don't even nearly want to start another somewhat philosophical discussion on the value and the nature of what constitutes a work like an anime or manga series, but... can you really do that? Either practically or theoretically. Either way, the rest of the series exists, whether you pretend it does or not, and it has an effect on the quality and tone of the series as a whole. The "post-climax" part cheapens the "pre-climax" imo, just by existing, the same way that Episodes I, II, and III have destroyed some parts of the earlier Star Wars series and can't simply be "unseen".

I can see what you're meaning about a sequel cheapening the original (it's only happened once for me with Gundam SEED, thankfully; even with SW I wasn't a great fan of the originals), and I might be more generous in the case of Death Note because I didn't dislike Near's storyline, certainly nowhere near on the level that Destiny frustrated me after seeing Gundam SEED. I felt it stuck more with the established rules of the series than that mess did.

Perhaps part of why I'm more relaxed is also because I saw the live action Death Note films (well, the first two) before finishing the original material, and since they have a separate continuity I was already in the mood to see different outcomes as 'what if's. I really liked the way the movies tied the climax up, as an aside. We can definitely chalk this one up to personal biases from me!

Having never seen Deathnote, I always feel left out during the many occasions it gets discussed in spoiler taged fervour. Can't we heatedly discuss Trigun in a similar manner, instead?

Anyway somewhat unsurprisingly I would vote for Vash to be a representative. Haters gon hate but Vash is still da man (lol)

Also I would probably vote for Master Keaton. Sure he may look boring, but have you seen what he can do with a couple bars Cadburys Dairy Milk Chocolate?

Interesting, I should probably watch those. I think that might make the end of the "actual" series less bad by comparison, but I think it probably is even more of a let-down in terms of how strong the series would have been had it stuck to its original vision which was totally Light vs L, imo, which is where I feel that the end of the series doesn't stick with the established "rules" of the series.
