Well devil may cry anime was a let down.

For a game that boasts it's "stylish action" i noticed that yea there was plenty of style(metro dante)but the erm lack of well action?
On the trailer we see dante shooting the hell out of demons episode 1 it looked great demons were a little dull but hey it's got to get better as it goes along right?...wrong.

The story failed to really get anywhere we see the day in the life of dante which involved him eating pizza and...strawberry sundaes(right real badarse) ,and in very cool looking poses...doesn't really make much for a story.

Visually yep it's really nice the background the gothic themed devil may cry office the way the light shimmered of a building(ever get the feeling that they spent a little to long on making it look nice).

Voice acting fine(when dante spoke).

But to be honest i was just so let down in the games we this womaniser who made some of those cheesy hollywood comebacks who takes out countless demons.
To this(well i hate to say but i think he's in the closet)who stayed quiet and takes out any of the big bad guys in 1 hit
It was dmc2 all over agian :(

Well i only saw the first episode and then opted to wait for the rest to come out so i could have a nice marathon session. Judging by your review, i think i'll give it a pass....

I tried. Oh man i tried to love it because I adore the games (well, 1 and 3 anyway...), but I really couldn't. After some mildly cool (if cliched) action in the first episode it just slid down hill. Theres plenty of complaints to be made, but these are the worst IMO:

Dante is simply not cool, or even funny for that matter. He rarely speaks and when he does he's grumpy and boring.

I only watched to episode 9, but as far I can tell theres no larger plot as such and even as standalone stories the episodes are awful.

The whole thing is so damn uninspired! Theres so little originality or thought in anything! It looks nice (its done by Madhouse so that should be expected) but the design is frankly bland.

I know I've gone into overdrive here and maybe I expected too much of this for what it was. Its not the worst series ever by any means just fairly disappointing.

I had a feeling this was going to suck as soon as I read an article on Japanator where the writer was doing nothing but complain about how bad the series was coming along up to that point. I guess even now it hasn't got any better.

Sounds about right. Seemed like the writer(s) didn't really know what to do with Dante's character. They tried to give the 2 dimensional character from the games some depth, and failed.

Well to go against the flow of this topic, I really like it, true its not til ep 12 that you get the world turned into that of the one found in the games, but I found it a good anime.

Cheap cash-in animu like Advent Children, but at least DMC had some sort of ****** plot... >_>

Except Advent Children was designed as a sequel and thus was made for people who had played FFVII - meaning there was no need to rehash past character development or whatever. Whereas DMC anime was meant to be stand-alone.

Oh and if you think Advent Children was "cheap" can you please point in the direction of the obviously more expensive-looking anime that you watching? Thanks ^_^

Don't matter, they were still equally terrible.

Advent Children was just a ****** cash-in movie, considering FF VII has by far the largest and most idiotic fanbase of the series, just because I said "Cheap cash-in animu" doesn't mean I don't know it was expensive to make. ;/

And I'm not going to go any further into this, dawg, I'm sick of the f-cking VII fans trying to prove AC was good, even though they're basically lying to themselves.

Despite the fact that you were the one who originally mentioned AC in this topic. For God's sake the FF thread is there for a reason.
Surprisingly i thought this was "your thoughts about DMC" not "another chance to compare something to FF" discussion.

I've only seen a couple of episodes of the series and didn't think it was all that bad, not great but not terrible if ya get me. But i despised the little girl character, it just took the series down a notch and i havn't played the games a lot but i'm sure she's not in it. Why have a childish character in an anime of such a dark series?
Also dunno if the Japanese games are different but Dante in the uk version of the game i played seemed a wise cracking charismatic character with the ego a size of a truck, yet as people have stated he hardly even talks nevermind look badass.

Maybe they'll toughen Dante up for the dub?

Oh, we don't need to convince ourselves that AC is good - over 4 million people worldwide bought the DVD, and it won the Inaugural US Anime Awards "Best movie" award ;)

The thing is, people like you fail to understand what FFVII: AC is and have too rigid a definition of "film" to accept that a film could carry on the storyline of a videogame.

Dear Final Fantasy fanboys and Final Fantasy haters; you may continue your traditional bitching contest on the popular RPG series Final Fantasy in this debate topic. Believe it or not, there is a reason why I created the debate topic and I would be really pleased if people were using it. As much as I like discussing Final Fantasy, let's try not discussing it in a Devil May Cry topic which has nothing to do with Square Enix, pretty please?

Moving on...

I thought the cutscenes in DMC3 were some of the most awesome action scenes I've seen in video games. I would have been a very happy bunny if they had managed to include that kind of action in the DMC anime, because let's face it when you play DMC you play it for the action and not for the amazingly gripping storyline. So I think it would have been wise to have just set stand alone episodes where Dante performed jobs as he usually does, but this time making sure it doesn't suck. I do like DMC, but from what I've seen this really is quite a poor jump from game to anime.

What did you expect from basing an anime on an average game?

Hmm, I quite liked DMC3 (which is the only of the 3 games I've played) and (I think the critics will back me up on this one, too) definately didn't think it was average. The story in DMC was pretty cool too!

Only played the first one but i loved it, Alastor and the pistols was the best combination (though my friend swore by the Ifrit gloves with a grenade launcher.....wierdo)

I take it as theres no plans for a second series of the DMC anime?

Aww I had such hope for this... :(

What would of been so wrong with just animating the events of the third game? After all it is the prequel of the series (baring the first novel which no longer fits the continuity)

Yeah, the DMC games are great, just a shame the anime didn't keep up with the games' standard of quality. I think some people would rather play DMC2 than finish watching the rest of this... :S
