Weird symbols and email subject lines

Hi y'all.

It has been pointed out that there's something strange going on with strange characters inserting themselves into posts, especially with quoting. It's being looked into so please don't panic. If you notice anything especially odd please bring it to our attention here.

Known issues so far:

Emails generated by the forum are showing up with a garbled subject line.
Quoted and edited text is coming up with some letters/numbers displayed as missing characters.

I noticed when I quoted it wanted to insert 3 or 4 [/quote] at the end of a single quote.

Also basic posting cerain words seemed to not post correctly, mostly when I was trying to talk about prices

Yeah most of the issues I am having too are linked to pricing, especially in the Marketplace thread.
It's messing up numbers, replacing one or two letters/numbers with weird symbols and taking out the gaps for a new line.

Hi guys, it's ages since the last server update, nothing has changed on our systems in the last two / three months, so I'm not sure it's a problem on our site to be specific.

So, what sort of things gets the text garbled? prices ?

Mangaranga, can you please tell me what OS version and what browser version are you using? Have you tried switching browsers?

Edit: £120
..... prices seems to be ok here. On Mac OS 10.7.5 and Safari 6.0.2

Chaos, I think it's everyone (Chrome/Safari/Camino for me, on Win7 and OS X 10.7/10.6 machines). It's almost guaranteed to trigger if you post a price with a UK pound symbol then edit the post.

£30 £.95 £1R, testing

That was on Chrome/Win7. No idea why it's only certain numbers which do it, but if you receive a PM with email notifications on you'll see the garbled subject line issue too where the encoding has gone nuts.

Also, in the Viewing Journal thread before Mangaranga made me aware of the problem, I had a weird situation the other day where I couldn't use spoiler tags when quoting a post about Code Geass. I got around it by posting a new reply which worked fine, but looking back it was pretty weird and the timing was similar. I couldn't see any strange characters but if there was an invisible or wrongly encoded character there it might explain why the tags weren't working in that one specific post.

Win Vista, Firefox 17, and yes, I do get the problem, especially when quoting.
