What is a VTuber?

Polish_20210701_125923092.jpg

A virtual YouTuber (Japanese: バーチャルユーチューバー, Hepburn: bācharu yūchūbā) or VTuber (ブイチューバー, buichūbā) is an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar generated using computer graphics. A digital trend that originated in Japan in the mid-2010s, a majority of VTubers are Japanese-speaking YouTubers or live streamers who use anime-inspired avatar designs. By 2020, there were more than 10,000 active VTubers.[1]

The first entertainer to use the phrase "virtual YouTuber", Kizuna AI, began creating content on YouTube in late 2016. Her popularity sparked a VTuber trend in Japan, and spurred the establishment of specialized agencies to promote them, including Hololive Production and Nijisanji. Fan translations and foreign-language VTubers have marked a rise in the trend's international popularity.[2] Virtual YouTubers have appeared in domestic advertising campaigns in Japan, and have broken live-stream-related world records.

Trash Taste podcast got me to start watching them. Love CDawgVA's streams with ironmouse.

I'd watch more HoloLive if I understood them... Some of the translated videos are great though.

Many have also said this, when being introduced to VTubers.

Their podcasts is truly great content and pure comedy while gathering a worldwide Anime/Manga audience to one place.

That's true, luckily some of them are fluent/native English speakers like Coco. Though if you're looking for Hololive's English branch, believe they have you covered there.

I love Coco so much and her graduation stream was really hearty.....I just wish that people returning to her very seperate account and persona would stop commenting so many things that outright name her there and square because it feels pretty disrespectful!! but I am excited to see what is in store for her in her new endavours and I need to watch more shitpost reviews anyway, they're so fun

Though surprising, despite creating this VTuber thread, I haven't actually fallen into the rabbit hole (watch a few clips here and there) 🙃 Though I'm somewhat aware of the individuals (YouTube algorithm). Coco is indeed a much loved talent and will be missed by many I'm sure.

Yeah no doubt there, especially don't want her channel catching the attention of a certain group of followers behind the controversy.

I am excited to see what is in store for her in her new endavours and I need to watch more shitpost reviews anyway, they're so fun
Add in some drip Adidas collection hauls+reviews on top and we have the full package right there 🙌

The other day I happened to watch the first "watching someone else play a game rather than just playing it yourself" video to ever have a concept that interested me enough to actually click on it and since Big Brother Google Big Brother is always watching and clearly knows my type (and probably knows that I've read this thread) the recommendations sidebar immediately started racking up videos of a VTuber by the name of Kureiji Ollie playing Minecraft. Out of morbid curiosity I decided to watch some of them. I feel conflicted.

In some ways, this feels like quite an exciting future arriving. It's kind of a cool way for people to roleplay, the technology is pretty impressive (and is only going to get more-so) and her VA (actress? performer?) effortlessly flipping between three different languages was fascinating. Also she was surprisingly entertaining and endearing and not awful. But in other ways, something feels a little wrong. Like if this is a thing that's going to be (as it seems it already is) monopolised and cynically exploited by "talent managing" corporations, presumably on the basis of popularity and how well the characters/personalties "test" that feels like kind of a disappointing (if inevitable) result to what could have been a very individually empowering use of technology.

There's something else that nags at me about the whole concept as well; I get a weird sense about pretty much every form of... well, can I call it prostitution whilst at the same time saying I don't necessarily see that as a dishonourable profession (I mean, aren't we all prostitutes to some degree)? With everything from actual prostitution to porn stars to camgirls (and boys) to idols to maid cafes/host clubs to streamers to tramps begging for change, part of me always wonders if they really want to be doing this or if it's just a source of income. It kind of spoils my own enjoyment a bit to be constantly wondering how real or fake someone’s enjoyment of entertaining/pleasing/begging for money/likes/subs from other people is. Which is perhaps odd considering if I had the sex appeal or the personality for it (although the most predominant personality in entertainment these days seems to be people whose main draw is how ridiculously and loudly they can fake-overreact to everything, that’s the same whether we’re talking about porn stars or game streamers) I’d probably be the biggest whore in the world, attention or otherwise. Perhaps part of me just expects everyone to hate their jobs and if they seem to enjoy them, I figure they must be faking it.

That's some really deep thought there. Nonetheless, your perspective to VTubers is pretty interesting especially thinking about it long term.

I'm definitely sensing we're heading towards a degenerate cyberpunk world 😅

The three new Nijisanji EN girls are cute.

Petra seems to be getting a lot of followers already :) (Just needs to stop laughing and popping the mic lol)

and Rose's Minecraft stream was pretty good

-------

As for What @ayase said, I mostly agree

The following is all speculation

Vtuber agencies are pretty bad when it comes to taking the money for the talents work, its the same as Jpop Idols (and if you want a more western example)... Youtube Networks like Machinima or Revelmode. They're setup to take the grunt of licensing and partnership deals. They also put a spotlight on someone who might never have a chance. So I see why they should be paid... but without knowing the exact % I'm always a little off about it

I'm also a little concerned if they're contracted to do X amount of streams a week or a certain amount of hours a month, rather than do what they want to do... expectations are a real easy way to burn people out. Again, this is only speculation but I think Nijisanji has a stricter requirement on whats expected from the talent

I wouldn't be surprised if Hololive is less strict when it comes to stuff like this because its had people like Coco who have told staff to F off when they're being stupid about things and the Generation Zero members were already well known in the Vtuber Community so they put Yagoo in his place.

Ofc, Coco graduating could also mean she got fed up with Hololive Management

----

One thing I disagree on, I think they're a lot more genuine than Idol Cafe workers or Cam Girls just wanting to make £££. Quite a few of Hololive and Nijisanji talent were already streamers before joining these agencies and quite a few do it just for the fun of things or as a platform to make their talent noticed.

Do I think some of these put on a show just for views? Without a doubt

Well, its been a few days now so not /spoilers

Good to see Holo Live EN girls managed to kill the ender dragon, so much prep but in the end they were their usual clumsy selves lol. Still can't belive Calli got lost within the first 15 mins of the stream and didn't think to follow the huge staircase

Also found Yousa's BML 2020's songs and she sings March Rain <3
