Right, since i've had no luck with online questions and such i thought i'd ask here. Since yesterday roughly my computer has been acting strangely asking for me to prove vista is genuine, as well as the most recent problem today which basically is everytime i try to open the control panel, it closes itself before i get a chance to deal with anything. Was wondering if anyone had a clue as to whats going on and any way to go about sorting it?

 Download a crack??

Did it come installed on the PC or did you buy it? How long was it running before it started doing this?(I know you said yesterday but I mean how long has Vista been on there like)

I don't work on a PC, sorry should have said. I work on my laptop basically every chance i get, and it came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed, so that would be about a year and a half roughly.

Removing and then putting the CMOS battery back in is always a good last resort option.

Edit: Nevermind. Don't know much about knee crushers. :p

Or replacing the CMOS all together would be better >>

other then that vista seems to have this nice treat of befriending everyone in its own special way =^^=

try a variety of ways to get into the control panel like right clicking and personalising menu from of the desktop, then see if it still does the same thing with the control panel

also see if you can change it to give you just the basic services

if all else falls 'Tiny XP'

I actually went with the system restore idea, its got me back onto the control panel. I was gonna use it as a last resort but thought it best just to go with that instead. The main problem now is that proving vista is genuine. Apparently there is a program on here which is preventing it from being valid. No matter where i look though its not showing up.

If it came pre-installed, then you shouldn't put any sweat into it. Just ring them up and tell them about the situation and they'll do it for you, you'll probably have to input an activation code of some sort, or something.

I take no responsibility, but it's clearly the result of you warning me. I hope you've learnt your lesson.

If you have your Win XP code, all you need is a CD. Lend one from a friend and you can reinstall over your current stuff, which should fix issues with missing files. If you don't, all you need to do is take your laptop to a local repair place and ask them to reinstall - I've had to do it myself once or twice because my computer didn't come with a CD, and Time went south.

Screw professional help - that costs money.

Backup. Format. Re-install. Never fails and doesn't cost you a penny.

Good point. I'm still stuck in last generation OS thinking. What's with Microsoft not giving you a disc these days anyway? How are you supposed to be able to reinstall?*

*Thank you Otaku for answering my question before I even asked it. ;)

Apparently my system is genuine now, i went through the whole validation thing that microsoft has online and it said i was now, which seems rather odd, but it is microsoft and they can be rather annoying =/ I'll keep this closed now my problem is solved somehow.
