The age of illegal music downloads could soon be over. The UK's largest provider of home broadband is to warn internet users building up vast libraries of music that they could be prosecuted.

From next week, Virgin Media will send letters to thousands of households where music is either being downloaded or illegally shared. Many of the recipients are likely to be the unsuspecting parents of teenagers who hoard free downloads offered by file-sharing services. Research shows the majority of them are unaware their children are breaking the law.

Sup china?

so videos are fine then lol

time to change isp

Edit:

taken from the news

We have received information that Virgin Media, is from tomorrow (May 29th), going to start mailing its customers who download and upload, excessively.

sounds like they're only focusing on people who obviously provide and seed using up alot a bandwidth

We have received information that Virgin Media, is from tomorrow (May 29th), going to start mailing its customers who download and upload, excessively. We have been told that they are in the process of writing to those high usage broadband customers who are downloading and / or uploading huge amounts, which Virgin Media claim can have an overall impact on the broadband experience for all their customers.

Last month, we highlighted that Virgin Media was trialling in several locations, new measures to traffic shape its heavy broadband users. We also raised concerns that Virgin Media was still advertising its broadband service as a ‘No download limits’ product. In the letter Virgin Media are still claiming customers can download lots and they aren’t limiting downloads. Virgin Media are clearly missing the point.

The point is that they are advertising a certain speed, customers are paying for that level of speed. So if a customer downloads over a limit or threshold, their speed is reduced. Which ever way you look at it, it is a download limit. A no download limit service dictates that there are no limits or no thresholds whatsoever.

copies of the letters here

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/402 ... -customers

so in sort, this isn't an "anti piracy" move

it's a "stop some of the high downloaders and help increase our net speeds" move

Most people don't even use, let alone KNOW what their ISP given mail and net space is, so how the hell are these warnings supposed to be acknowledged?

I don't use mine, and I can't even remember the details without exhuming them from the piles of letters in the drawer.

Maybe they'll send two huge fella's in black suits to your house to break your shins once you've crossed the line.

Ahhh, that means playing the 'oblivious dumbass' character is out the window.

Why are people acting as though being stopped from illegally downloading copyrighted material is a infringement on your right to freedom or something? It isn't. And it's unfair to think yourself entitled to free music or movies that people have invested lots of money and hard work into. I applaud Virgin for taking this stand (even if they are only doing it to ease the pressure on their own bandwidth!)

Like Ryo Chan said, if you download fansubs and whatnot, you're hardly in a position to criticise.

You really believe everyone puts hard work and lots of money into everything nowadays? Wow. If they don't put the effort in, they don't deserve money.

If they have to resort to this, their broadband service sucks balls.

I watched unlicensed anime and I buy the series when (and if) they are released.

That's different to downloading any music I want and could easily purchase on iTunes or one of the many other music DL sites. Or watching movies that are currently playing at the cinema or are easily available to rent or to buy. Or watching anime that is licensed and on DVD. There is a difference; don't bother trying to spin and twist what I do into being some kind of hypocrisy when it isn't.

That's a ridiculous logic. If someone makes a bad product (music, movie, TV series etc.) then, first of all, it's your opinion that it's bad and secondly, it's not up to you to decide whether something deserves to be paid for.

I'm not trying to stop y'all from destroying the entertainment industries you enjoy so much, but please don't act as though companies trying to protect their interests is a bad thing.

That'd make you the first.

Not all of us can afford it. We dont want to buy anime/music/films and find out they are crap. We Download, if we like, we buy it, if we dont like it, we wont buy it, because we dont think its worth the money.

Simple.

you were trying to find a stream for code geass a few months ago

last i checked, that was licenced

and it's just as easy to buy anime from japan as it is to buy from itunes

Was it out on DVD? Is it even out on DVD now? Was there any kind of certainty about it even coming out? The answer to all those questions was no. Besides, I've said a number of times that I intend to buy Code Geass on DVD.

That's not a justification at all. It's not for you to decide what you deserve for free because you can't afford to pay for it. Sorry, but that's a weak explanation.

.

Yes to 1 and 2, Japanese vols 1-8

is it coming out in US? yep, soon as they've shown enough of it on Adult Swim.

and by the logic that's going on here, it's ok for me to download FMP 2nd raid aslong as i intend to buy it?

Besides all this, when did unlicenced anime become legal to download? guess those guys who got arrested for uploading shows have nothing to worry bout then

To me it is cause, thats exactly how it works, as Maltos just said. At the end of the day, alot of us on here dont have jobs (or at least not full time) because we're younger, or still in education, where do we get the money from? Part time jobs, or just odd jobs for other people (For younger people like me, parents, family, etc.)
We cant afford to buy all this music and anime (especially with the price of anime), just to be dissapointed. I would NEVER have bought Haruhi, because it didnt look my thing, but I checked it out, ive watched some, and now im gonna be buying all the LE's because im that impressed!! If I hadnt looked it up, then the industry would be £120+ worse off, because I wouldnt have looked at it twice. Also, if we have the original disc, downloading it and burning it saves the original disc damage etc :) So it'll always stay nice and perfect :)

@Maltos: Brilliant choice!! Must be the best Jethro Tull album there is :D :D
