What's everyones view?

i bring this up cos now there is a German running the EU they are trying to push some videogames to the back of shop and make them ore difficult to buy. is this right?

All the correct laws are in place to prevent the sales of mature video games to children. Unfortunately there are still a few game distributors that don't care about these things, and a significant amount of parents.

Yeah, plus bringing all the comotion of Rule of Roses and Bully...

Why can't they ban GTA for godsake, that deserve the ban most of all, its crap

You could, but there's all the things real life restricts with laws and crap, like GTA is killing people and breaking laws. : D

I don't think that any game should be banned because of violence, yes have age ratings and/or take other measures to stop kids playing them but theres no reason why an adult shouldn't be allowed to make their own choices about what to play and it's been proven that violent video games don't make people crazy killers and we all know that video games are just the latest entertainment to be blamed for societies promblems like films and rock and roll were before it.

This is such a no-issue so can we just stop talking about it and leave that to the tabloids?

Its more the parents. I have heard one mother commenting that she would only get GTA 3 (original 18 cert) for her kids because San Andreas being the newest is obviously far worse.

All the laws are in place. Video game bans have a lot more to do with outright censorship, than protection of children. If I buy smokes or booze for kids, I can be fined or sent to jail. I don't see why a parent who buys an 18 cert game for their kids shouldn't be fined, sent to jail or be sent to social services.

Games simply aren't that damaging to warrant an 18 cert like that. But highballing the cert like that doesn't hurt and its actually good marketing for the companies involved. But the reaction to the games is misplaced. People want video games to be 'safe', babysitters are expensive but the PS3 works for free.

As long as its rated who cares what the content is, i mean films have far more violent content than games the only difference is that the player takes an active role in games. So the system in place right now, the flaw is parents buy 18 rated games for kids cause they think games are ok no matter what and don't take the age ratings as seriously as they would for movies.

A friend of mine has 4 kids - eldest in her early teens and he is big gamer.

He pays attention to the certs, he knows (and loves GTA, all versions) but he is strict about what he lets the kids play.

Probably because he doesn't want to share the awesomeness. My 9 year old nephew plays GTA games it doesn't really do much, he thinks of it as mindless fun, it's not like he's going to grow up thinking killing is ok, he knows you just can't do it.

Why ban it? Because it's crap? Have to disagree, loved the series. Because it's violent? Because you break the law in it? Shouldn't you there for ban Civilizations (dropping nuclear weapons is against the law and violent). Graphically there are worse (Dark Messiah is far more gory), head count wise there are again worse (any first person shooter). Is to because it is specifically about crime? What about the whole Thief or Tomb Raider series? No one crying out to ban these games? Is it because Rockstar (the makers of the series) have used the media as a form of advertising, and have done it well? Using the right amount of controversy to get publicity but not enough to get the game utterly condemned.
There is as yet no link between violent games and violence (there was that long before the video game ever was dreamed of).

I have an even better game for that one; Defcon.

The entire game is based on firing nukes to other countries while protecting your own.

I agree I love GTA, but if you said you should ban games for being 'moroally' (one of the campaigners faver buzz words) wrong, then what games could you actually play???

Racing - Promotes dangerous driving
Beat-em-up - Promoting fighting and violent behaviour
RTS - (like C&C) well nuking each other and sening hundreds of thousands to their death - this is reserved for govenments only.
MMORPG - (like WoW) promotes slaying Trolls and Orcs an endangered species I am sure.

And the list goes on

Oh and my favourite Pokemon which lets face it is about kids trapping animals and then making them fight each other, I thought dog fighting and cock fighting was illegal, unless its done by cute animals of course.... lol

I'm not for banning any games, irrespective of the level of violance they might have. That's the whole point of having a guidance/ranking system isn't it, so that ppl who r not meant to play a certain game don't???
