Video Game Films - The Endless Curse?

Right, all of us gamers know that video game films have had a VERY bad history - By films I am referring only to those with actors

In my view, I believe that the only decent video game film has been Silent Hill and Hitman could follow but what do you all think of video game films - has the curse been broken or not?

I'm also asking you guys - what do you think makes a good video game film?
As that will shape how you think on this topic

When it comes to video game to film adaptions, i have two thoughts.

first thought) That the people making it should stick to the source materia as close as the medium would allow. I know in some cases this won't be possible, but if they could just stick to the basic premise and had some cool bits of the games put into the film then i wouldn't have a problem. However only a few films have actually done this (Silent Hill being an example) and a lot of films have messed it up badly (like the second Resi Evil film *sarcasm*thanks for making nemesis a good guy*sarcasm*, )

Second thought) They should try and tell their own story set in the same universe and have refrences to the events in the games. This would work wonders for Halo movies, you could set them before the events of the first game and who what happened at Reach (I know that's described in the first Halo novel but who wouldn't like to see it as a movie). But once again that wouldn't work for some franchises

Yeah its an interesting thought - for me the only good video game to film adaptations have been under your first defintion of a good video game flim - I didn't think much of the resident evil films at all

For me, the resi evil films could of been so much more. They've been going downhill since the first. I still wish that they had managed to keep the director they had from the start (in the begining they wanted the guy who did the oringal Night of the Living Dead, and its following movies, being Dawn, Day and finally Land). I bet that would of turned out a lot like the first game

Will Smiths new film I AM LEGEND has also been turned into a game which will be released around the same time as the movie, from the trailers the movie looks amazing but I do not hold out much hope for the game

Dead or Alive RULED.

Pure brainless cheese, and Kevin Nash looks amazingly ridiculous as Bass. Sarah Carter is lovely too.

I think most people just don't give videogame movies a chance nowadays. If you go into something convinced it's **** and that you'll hate it, you probably will hate it.

Oh I agree that if you go into a film with a "this'll be ****" attitude then you will probably hate it, unless it is really crap anyway - but with most game films I've either gone in with a neutral view of it or positive - with thise view I have rarely been rewarded but I never lose hope! As said earlier the Resi films could have been so much more!

i quite liked the resi films..they had bits that you realise are from the games and think...WOW i know which one that is from!
i haven't seen resi extinction yet tho....any good?

Well I watched my friends version if you get my meaning - if you didnt like the first two you'll hate this one!!! but if you like them, then you'll probably like it I'm not sure - just the whole style it was done in was poor and I hate the whole Alice thing! Well thats how I felt!

Didn't resi two have Jill Valantine in it? but nonetheless it would of been nice if they had at least followed the plot points from the games in order (this would of meant that Nemesis would of been in the third film, though in thinking about it doing the third film like the third game would be almost impossible due to the timeline thing :? ) Enough about the resi films though, there is plently more coming. Like the castlevaina movie. Though i wish they would hurry up and do a Devil May Cry movie

As long as its not directed by Uwe Boll than thats ok!! If somone could remake Alone In The Dark the way it was meant to be made and eradicate the old ones existence from history that would be great!

The film does look awsome like (even if it is a 2nd remake).
That's something that really burns my groin! The ammount of games brought out with new films!! It's rediculouse!! You name it and the've made a game from it. I know I mite sound a bit over the top but it does sicken me! It wouldn't seem so bad if they were well made with time taken over their development... but noo, lets throw it together with the actors voice overs and promote it endlessly before the film comes out. It's just all a bit slap-dash for me. But this is only my opinion. I'm probably not the voice of the majority.

they only used the characters from the 3rd game though they should've dropped alice and just gone with chris or sommat

I actually think that the Resident Evil films were good entertainment. Although it was kind of a waste of the copyright since the Zombies and Umbrella are the only things used really.

I think as a video game player you have to take these films portraying the games, purely with a pinch of salt.
It's kind of like novel adaptations, they kind of pick the best bit and change the rest due to budget constraints or what they believe would suit their target audience or work best with in the little time they have to show everything.
Personally i can't think of any video game film i've thought was above average because i can't help but hate the changes, the target audience and the casting they've made, hypocritical yes lol. I understand why the writers/producers and director have changed it but still they can never really stay ultimately faithful to the subject matter which unfortunately sucks.

Yeah - what you've said is true and I'm glad some people realise that they're are going to be differences between the two mediums - I dint like the resi films purely as I didn't like them as films and the rejection of most of the storyline etc just hurt more! The only decent video game film I think was silent hill (I should mention that I'm a huge fan of films as well as games)
