UKA Interview Manga Entertainment

Aion

Time-Traveller
UK Anime Net has followed up interviewing MVM by getting Jerome, the man of Death Note question fail, to answer a few fan questions. Going on what Ross said on the forum, he ignored my late Death Note questions about the the release plans (single or double) and box set...again. Bastard guy.

UKA Interview said:
Manga Entertainment has been responsible for bringing arguably the biggest titles into the UK in 2008 – specifically Death Note, Bleach, GitS and Naruto. How have those titles performed for you, and do you think they’ve helped to expand your market?

JM - You forgot to mention The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Origin - Spirits of the Past! But yes, it's been a tremendous year for Manga. Naruto is by far the best selling ANIME franchise in the UK outside of the Studio Ghibli Collection. Bleach is the second best and Death Note the third. I have to thank the terrific and dedicated fans of these shows for their continuing success.

What was the biggest title for Manga in 2008? And what didn’t hit expectations?

JM - Origin and The Girl Who performed really well. Better than expected. Origin outsold Vexille and Applesed Ex Machina as did The Girl Who.
Both films have sold over 10,000 copies over the counter in their first 8 weeks of release. I was a bit disappointed with our Voltron release though.

Your recent deal with Funimation gives you a huge catalogue of hit titles to distribute – how did that deal come about?

JM - I must clarify a few things about Manga's relationship with Funimation. We don't have a sales and distribution deal with them like our arrangement with Viz Media. What we have done with Funi is license specific titles from them on a case by case basis. The deal came about through Funimation reaching out to me through our parent company in the US. Manga has built a great relationship for itself in the UK and this has not gone unnoticed by our friends in Japan and the US.

Are there any series for which you won distribution rights for that surprised you? Are there any series you wanted but missed out on?

JM - We all work really hard at Manga to secure the best content possible. I am not being arrogant, but Manga's track record in achieving the best distribution and exposure for our releases has meant that potential Licensors approach us first, so we usually get what we want. I love some of the stuff Bandai Visual is producing at the moment. Titles such as Freedom, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzamiya, Sword of the Stranger and Gurren Lagan are all shows I wish we could distribute in the UK. But they handle their own sales through Beez. Those are the titles I really wish we had. And of course the Studio Ghibli Collection.

How do you think the performance of other key distributors has affected the market as a whole? ADV in particular has gone through a sticky period – did that affect you?

JM - It has saddened me to hear of ADV's problems. Contrary to what some people think, none of us want to see the fan's miss out on their favourite shows. I like working with MVM, Beez and ADV/Lace. We all share information and work together to do our best to meet the fan's needs and further the ANIME cause. Manga has also helped Momentum to promote Vexille and Warners with Appleseed Ex Machina. We do stuff with Otimum too. We're all competitors, but we all understand the importance of working together to maximise the categories potential in the UK.

With the launch of Crunchyroll as a distributor, does Manga Entertainment have plans to expand into digital content? Are such services a threat or a new opportunity?

JM - We already have been. A selection Manga catalogue is already available on ITunes and XBOX Live with more new titles like Origin, The Girl Who, Afro Samurai to go live soon. We offer clips on our Manga.co.uk site and we also start working on mobile. Crunchy Roll is interesting, we'll see how it goes. I wouldn't rule anything out at this stage.

Finally, a question from our forum:

Having heard that Manga are possibly planning to begin the release of Naruto Shippuden as early as this summer, how does this square with the large amount of Naruto still left to run?

JM - it will be impossible for is to release Shippuden this year. We have to get to the end of Naruto first. We're up to episode 126 in February and should be finished with the seirira by the end of the year. At least you can watch it on Crunchy Roll!

Note: My use of "Mangled Entertainment" is a fishing attempt. I'm curious to see if the "fish" will bite, again.

"I love some of the stuff Bandai Visual is producing at the moment."

I found that a bit surprising, given that in the last post Jerome wrote here last September he said:

"As for your criticisms of Bandai Visual. I agree and it worries me that at a time were studios and licensors should be branching out into new markets we are seeing BV contract its operation and focus on a very specialist niche, that of the otaku. The dedicated Japanese collector's will continue to pay top dollar for less. Manga does not believe this stratgey works in the UK hence the value box sets for shows like Bleach, Naruto and Death Note. Price is always a barrier to bringing in new fans. If Manga did what BV is doing and just focused on catering to the hardcaore we would not have a business in a few more years."

I still find the UK anime industry a very odd creature. They think of each others as competitors but work together and share information? Makes you wonder why Manga don't use their position at the top to swallow up some of the smaller operators and reduce competition - or is Jerome hinting (through desire for their titles) that their only real competition is Beez, and that they don't particularly want titles MVM and ADV have/had?

Interesting is the statement that there is no Shippuden this year, as opposed to the earlier intimation of a Summer release. Makes sense with the amount of Naruto still unreleased.

Was that Viz saying Shippuden in the summer or was that Manga? If it was Viz then its still highly probable since on TV i think they are finished with the Filler stuff almost (or at least will be by summer)

At MCM Expo, Manga were saying Summer 2009.

I see thanks for that :thumb: I don't see why they can't release Shippuden still, for those who want to skip past the fillers, would it really hurt them to have two Naruto releases going on?

i don't think the US has even launched shipp yet so i'd expect us to be behind too

not to mention they're only up to the rescue sasuke arc on jetix

Re: UKA Interview Mangled Entertainment

Maybe the guy is just too positive about things and then see things get pulled out of his hands when he was certain they wouldn't.

I'm thinking about the other issue with Hellsing Ultimate here.

I don't believe he is ill intentioned or anything, just that not everything goes as he plans.

My main issue here is with the representitive that fails to answer questions, not Manga. And, in case you're on the slow side, I put "Mangled Entertainment" in the title because that caused Jerome to post for the first time ever on AUKN in the past. It was also a worthy name for them back before they stopped ******* up their releases.

Manga create their own problems by not informing fans about anything. Failure to clear up concerns upsets a lot of people. Because Jerome said he'd answer questions and then ran away before answering any in the past, he hasn't been able to assure fans that, for example, the the Claymore and Darker than Black listings on EVERY website are incorrect. They're still an incompetant company in many respects, and that's why it doesn't surprise me that Manga have randomly switched to releasing single disc Death Note releases without informing anyone.

Moving onto Shippuuden, it really doesn't matter if it does or doesn't get released over here, just like it doesn't matter if the Naruto fillers get box sets released. It's quite possibly the worst anime adaptation in history, most certainly the worst I've seen besides Love Hina, and even the source material the anime covered wasn't very strong. Lots of brainless Narutards will love it, no doubt, but it's a waste of money for anyone who has more than a few brain cells to rub together.

some outright hostility to UK anime companies on this board, no wonder these interviews are taking place elsewhere.
Well, we have a choice I guess. We can say what we think and have a real discussion / debate about the merits or otherwise of what UK companies are doing, or we can hold off criticising them until they give us an interview with no real news or hard questions asked. I know which I prefer.

Akaten said:
@ayase, sounds like they were talking about Bandai Visual releasing strategy before, rather than what it it now in which case I agree with him, not least for having pulled off worldwide launches last year when most Japanese studios are insisting on a 6 month window between domestic and foreign blu ray releases.
But haven't the last several major releases from Beez been exactly what Jerome seemed to be criticising in September - aimed at the collectors market? I'm thinking of the Freedom and Gunbuster Blu-rays, Wolf's Rain and Gundam Wing collections. It's possibly worth noting I bought all these...

He's got to be kidding, they're actually going to release the fillers in the 13 episodes every two and a half months format? Good luck with that, there won't be any paying customers left by the time Shippuuden rolls around.

Yeah, it does seem like a good idea to kill the series doesn't it?

Wanna bet that it was a condition on Viz's part?
