British film distributor Artificial Eye has pencilled in the 6th of May for the theatrical release date of Takashi Miike’s ’13 Assassins’. The film has been warmly received on the festival circuit and represents a return to a more traditional style of samurai revenge drama after the enjoyable oddity that was Sukiyaki Western Django.
Synopsis:
It is 1844 and the feudal country of Japan finds a rare moment of peace has descended. However, the possible rise to power of the depraved and psychopathic Lord Naritsugu, the Shogun’s younger brother, threatens to destroy that fragile peace and topple the Shogunate. In an effort to preserve order, high ranking official Sir Doi calls upon the noble samurai Shinzaemon to assemble an elite group of samurai warriors in order to carry out a daring ambush that may also be a suicide mission.
Artificial Eye specialise in foreign language and independent films ranging from Chungking Express to Zatoichi and in 2010 screened a number of highly regarded films such as Winter’s Bone and We Are What We Are around the UK, so hopefully ’13 Assassins’ will be seen in a number if regions.
