Yesterday, the final episode of Tokyo Ghoul, the 12-episode anime adaptation from Pierrot and Academy Award-nominated director Shuhei Morita, aired in Japan.

The series, which is based on a fantasy-horror manga by Sui Ishida, followed Ken Kaneki, who finds himself being attacked by a "ghoul", a human-like creature with a hunger for human flesh. After an accident leaves the ghoul dead and Kaneki with serious injuries, the university student discovers that the organs of his hunter have been transplanted into his body, thus leaving him as a half-human/half-ghoul hybrid.

Today, the official Chinese website for the series confirmed that a second TV anime will be airing in January 2015.

Wakanim and Animax simulcast the first season in the United Kingdom as it aired.

Really enjoying Tokyo Ghoul, glad it's getting another season. Hoping against hope that Wakanim doesn't get the rights!

Same, I'm still waiting to see the last episode!

Cool, definitely a show I have much interest in watching. I assume AL will get the UK rights to this again, I look forward to the first home video releases!

As I heard it was censored, I've opted to wait for the possibility of an uncensored blu-ray. However small the censorship, it bugs me, so please refrain from "but it's not so much censored". I did the same with Deadman Wonderland actually.

It's censored quite a lot, so in this case I think it will be much better on BD. But that doesn't stop me wanting to watch it streaming too to try to battle against the tide of spoilers from discussions online!

Unfortunately Wakanim's lackadaisical approach to scheduling hasn't really helped in that respect. The episodes have slipped back to the next week several times this season and now the delays have become so common I'm worried it will happen again with the finale -_-

(Of course, the French episodes are already up and there has been no word on when to expect a version we can watch here, reinforcing how little Wakanim cares for its viewers in the UK.)

Well if anyone is still waiting on Wakanim, good news! If you watch episode 10 of Terror in Resonance, it switches to using Tokyo Ghoul's audio at the 1:12 mark. So you can experience both shows simultaneously!

(There are no words adequate to express my sadness at Wakanim's absolute failure to deliver week after week.)

Streaming, download, or both?

Ah, I was too busy weeping with disappointment to remember to check the download service. The 720P download is affected too. But the free SD download is ok (well, so far).

Seriously? Good lord. UK streaming sites are doing a bang-up job at keeping fans from going all Long John Silver.

Could be worse, though; Animax don't even have episode 9 up yet.

I think baiting fans like this by (effectively) holding back the US version and then giving a poor UK simulcast* probably increases interest in obtaining a show illegally. I don't see people falling over themselves to watch things like Jinsei or even US-only titles like Barakamon or Sengoku Basara -End of Judgement- in the viewing journal thread, but making licensed shows available in an inadequate way makes people feel more impetus to seek out other methods in order to be able to view them on time or without silly glitches. So far this SD download is working ok so I can at least watch Terror only a day late, but if it hadn't worked I'd have tasted the first minute of the episode then been left hanging. Meanwhile all I see on Twitter is FUNimation reporting delays well in advance of the air time, reporting when the episodes go live and retweeting feedback from happy viewers. It's maddening.

(I'm sorry Andrew, but it's the end of the season and these two particular streaming companies are still failing to deliver anything but disappointment most weeks. It is annoying.)

* I wish to note that I use the term 'simulcast' through gritted teeth when I am talking about the UK streaming sites.

Just finished the final episode, yeah season 2 needed. Badly.

Hopefully the second season will be 24 episodes (considering the Manga's popularity boost I would place bets on it) so it can thoroughly develop the story as my only gripe with the first season was the pacing seemed off, you could tell they were rushing through the material.

Oh and the censorship, that was awful (Excited for A/L's release for full uncensored glory)

I second the need for the Manga being licensed. Would buy that in a heartbeat.

I just watched Tokyo Ghoul episode 12 on Wakanim after it went up this evening and it got me thinking a little. We know the delays are generally caused by subtitle delivery from what they have said in the past, but they're plainly using different subtitles to the US release unless it's full of British slurs and 'mum's (which I strongly doubt). Are they editing the US subs before uploading the episodes each time or is it that they're getting them made separately and the company/person responsible for translating and timing the subtitles for Wakanim is just slower than in the US?

I thought many streaming subtitles were sourced through the Japanese licensor these days so I'm a bit confused about how the process works (and more importantly, why it doesn't work very well in the UK whereas the US can keep to a schedule).

If they're slowing everything down just to anglicise the script for a British audience, it might be best if they stopped? I think we can cope with the occasional 'mom'.

After watching the last episode yesterday, this is all I've wanted to hear. Such epicness in the end! Hope the manga and the anime get a license in the west asap.

I had the same thought a couple of episodes back, where all the swearing seemed overly British. To be honest, I find it pretty jarring as I'm so used to Americanised subtitles. If it is the reason for the delay, I think it's ridiculous and totally unnecessary.

I just wish Anime Limited would let Crunchyroll have the streams for their shows, and use Wakanim as a secondary option for those who want the choice of Download to Own.

You say let - to date they have not made me an offer for a single show we've bought. They know who we are, where to reach us and that I have no problem dealing with them :). Don't do it for free especially as they have a built up audience - but the door is always open :).

FYI I'm a big supporter of all simulcasters and Netflix - so expect to as the seasons go on see content within week or broadcast (depending on holdbacks etc) go onto: Animax, Viewster, Wakanim and whoever else makes a sensible proposal :).

Actually the main reason Wakanim hasn't been ideal this season is they meant to wind down and take a break while developing the new version of their site based on feedback. But I asked them to keep going as I like working with them so this one is really my bad - it's also why shows go to Animax as well :).

Netflix is always something I consider now for after a show has finished and pitch as they come up - not every show is a good fit but you'd be surprised how quickly some of our newest acquisitions may find their way there...

Any other platforms I'm missing out? Amazon Prime video hasn't been easy to reach out to or we'd investigate that option too :).

Best,

AP

There's also iTunes (since Manga, Funimation & Sentai use quite a lot) so with that one you could add the subtitle only shows on there - for instance 'Tokyo Ghoul Season 1 (Original Japanese Version)' or something similar.

Viewster is also building up their anime selection, so asking them couldn't hurt.
