Three new North American licenses announced at conventions

It's been a busy weekend for anime conventions in the US this weekend, with Sakura-con and Anime Boston both taking place - whats more, both events have revealed some new anime licenses for North American fans to look forward to.

First up we have FUNimation Entertainment, who have announced that as of next Tuesday they will begin streaming currently airing series Aria the Scarlet Ammo (aka Hidan no Aria), J.C. Staff's adaptation of a girl with guns light novel series with romantic comedy overtones, set in a school where budding detectives are trained how to use weapons. No news on whether this particular stream will also be available to UK users via the company's YouTube channel, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for it.

Perhaps the biggest of the three announcements from the weekend comes from Bandai Entertainment, who have confirmed recent rumours and teaser images in revealing that they will be releasing Star Driver in North America. The series, an original project animated by Studio BONES, mixes slice of life school shenanigans with giant robots and a plot to take over the world using them and their unique powers.

Finally, Sentai Filworks have confirmed that this August will see a US DVD and Blu-Ray release of Anime no Chikara series Senkou no Night Raid, A-1 Pictures' series set in 1930s China and featuring a team of secret agents with special powers

Star Driver! YEAH!

That'll be on my list of thngs to import - unless a region 2 release is swiftly announced.

I can only implore people to buy Night Raid. Criminally overlooked show, probably due to a largely male cast and asking the audience to concentrate on what was being said.

Star Driver release date of November 22nd for the first half of the series - $50 RPP on Blu-ray. Feels like this has come round fairly quickly, even if April seems like ages ago when I actually check the date of this thread. Hmm.

Even though the blu-ray is really cheap I'll probably buy the DVD version. I wish they did combo packs >_>;

It's so ludicrously cheap that I'll put this on my next order regardless of whether or not there's a sale. Looking forward to the show.

Is there a chance of Planet Axel having this at all? I want to pre-order it on DVD.
Since i'm under the impression that Bandai titles are limited to what shops they go on.

I'll ask them tonight (it's on amazon so they should stock it). Planetaxel usually stock Bandai shows - it's Aniplex (and NIS America) that they don't tend to stock.

Bandai should be fine, their exclusives are usually time limited so they pop up everywhere eventually. In the case of Star Driver it seems more disorganisation with the release information than an intentionally limited release.

Yes, yes and yes! I don't think I've read such a (admittedly breif) synopsis of a new anime show that has appealed to me this much in a long time(well maybe aside from Baccano!, which I still haven't seen!). It sounds different.

Tbh, I ignored Night Raid as, given the premise, I was expecting a seat-shufflingly awkward piece of revisionist history (Japan not being best known for outstanding conduct in China at the time). In hindsight though, that was probably rather narrow-minded of me. Kishin Heidian put Japan on the side of the allies in WW2 and it was perfectly acceptable entertainment.

Why? Please don't do this, SD is definitely a show that is crying out to watched in HD.

Hah.

fwiw, Night Raid is forthright enough that they had to avoid screening one of the eps on TV. It's not quite the hardest hitting series you will ever see, and it does go off onto a somewhat high concept tangent in terms of the overall storyline, but there is very little in the way of shirking historical responsibility.

Hmm, I still have the problem that blu-rays are much less convenient than DVDs when I don't watch some shows on my PS3 setup. Since I feel SD will go down like a lead balloon with my other half, and it's not a short show, I'd prefer to watch on my computer, which for various irritating political reasons out of my hands is not blu-ray friendly.

It is a bit of a sore point for me, I really want to buy Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls but have had both the blu-ray and the DVD sets in my basket for months because I can't decide.

I should just double my budget and buy everything twice until the silly corporate wrangling period is over and I can upgrade all my hardware ヽ(;´д`)ノ

Will I love SD as much as I think I will? This can be your chance to take revenge if you don't like Kuroshitsuji.

Hehe. I think you probably should, yeah. It messes about a fair bit in the first third of the show, but once it settles down it was a fun, and - as Lawro says - fabulous ride. I'd be surprised if you didn't really like Takuto and/or (the far superior) Sugata. Excellent soundtrack, too.

Selfishly, I'm looking at the non-combi releases and thinking "that's saved me $10 for some DVDs I probably wouldn't have used", but I can see why it will still be annoying for people for a little while yet.

Blehh going to sort out another blu-ray player then and give it a shot. I hate you both :) in the nicest possible way.

R (may as well go for the prettier version of Hyakka Ryouran as well while I'm in the mood)

(Although my next bit of advice would be don't buy Samurai Girls in either format >_>)

I'm afraid I've been blinded by the voluptuous women and will have to ignore that this time :3

Just as long as you don't miss out on deceptively good shows along similar lines (ie. Seikon no Qwaser, if anyone actually licences the anime).
