Ok, I've said this before many many times, but I will say it again.
I saw Evangelion back in 2002 on the sci fi channel block with Martian Successor Nadesico and Blue Gender. At the time I did not have the remotest idea about its background and how popular it was.
And I thought it was largely rubbish.
It was monster of the week overkill, it never had even the remotest explanations for what was happening, it was silly, quite purile and had soap opera angst that would make neighbours blush. However I watched through it with the other two series, after all, at the time there was not all that much Anime to choose from.
Then there was the last two episodes, which forever destroyed any interest I had in the series. I quote from my journal from Friday 3rd January 2003 (After Sci Fi had switched its block to thursdays):
"I also saw the end of of my three Anime series last night. One was Evangelion (Bollocks) One was reasonable (Blue Gender) and one was really good and funny (Nadesico)"
So, a mediocre series with a terrible ending. I thought no more of it, and went and bought Nadesico not too much later.
Then I find it is one of the most acclaimed Anime out there, people worship it and it has new films and all sorts.
To be honest, I laughed and I was shocked.
I can't reverse my origional opinion on it. I think it is extremely mediocre to very very bad. The fact that it seems so popular just rubs salt in the wounds. I saw an episode on propeller the other night and it still looked terrible, so my opinion hasn't changed. I can count ten series I own and twenty I have seen that outclass it in every respect, including several mecha, and especially several 'psychological' anime.
So not, I don't like it at all, and I am not jumping on a bandwagon there, since when I saw it, I had never read anything about it on the net or knew anything else about it to be perfecytly honest. That is my own honest opinion, and I think it sucks that STILL loads of Anime come out being labelled 'the new Eva' etc. Ah well if I want mecha, I'll dig out Patlabor, Orguss 2 or Nadesico, if I want psychological, any of Kon's stuff, or any of ABe's stuff will do. Evangelion remains to me one of the worse anime series I have seen, and considering I own over 170 dvds including 12 series, and seen as many again if not more, that is very pooor. That is all there is to it.
