They were right.... too much manga could kill you

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: Miyagi Prefectural Police officials in northeastern Japan have announced on Monday that they discovered a man dead in his apartment underneath several hundred manga volumes and magazines. They are investigating the cause of death and whether the 37-year-old male company employee is another casualty of last week's earthquake in Miyagi.

According to the investigation, the man's co-workers visited his apartment in Sendai City's Aoba Ward at around 9:00 p.m. on May 14 after he failed to appear at work. (The magnitude-6.8 earthquake occurred at 8:43 a.m. that day and caused 10 confirmed deaths so far.) The officials say that the man stacked books two meters (about six feet) high throughout his entire room. They consider it possible that the books fell on top of the man's chest and abdomen and thus prevented him from breathing. However, a June 15 autopsy was inconclusive, which left open the possibility that the man's death was unrelated to the earthquake.

gotta admit, there are better ways to go

Wow, and I thought my manga collection was bad O.O. But then this would be the dream death for many OTT Otaku people... Though I'd be quite pissed of in the afterlife if I were to get crushed by something like Fruit's Basket or Loveless >_>.

That would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic...I suppose it's commonplace even in places like Japan with all that technology at their disposal that people still get killed in earthquakes.

But still...it's a lousy way to go, even if it's cruelly ironic in some ways (cue 'first real-life Death Note victim confirmed' etc.). Maybe arranging furniture and belongings like that isn't such a good idea in an earthquake zone!

Right time for some more shelves then and make sure I sit or lay far enough away not to repeat this if we have an earthquake.

You know, at the moment I'm picturing Sciezka from FMA.... .-. The bookworm girl, remember? They had to break her door down because she was trapped under loads of books. xD

Ouch, i agree on the tragic-comic ratio, nasty but dear lord this story is going to be circulating for a while, poor guy.

Oh well, at least he'll stand out in the afterlife. I mean, look at it this way, he could say he was killed by a REALLY badly written manga technically!

I just read this for a second time and turned behind me to remember that I have a bookcase above my bed, in line with my head/upper torso

Yep it's filled with manga
