They really should stop putting fan service in every anime

Yes you heard me and I know it's shocking to hear this from me but what I say is the truth, a good series isn't good when it has fan service, ok maybe a anime that's ment to have fan service like queens blade and such like that is ok but if there's a really good series that shows a flash of fan service it ruins it for me. If I wanted fan service I would watch a fan service anime but you see fan service I nearly 50% of anime these days.

Trigun
Cowboy bebop
Fma
Gits
Lucky star
Ouran high school
Fruits basket
The count of Manteca cristo

These are great series and are not praised for there fan service cause there isn't any................ Well maybe there's like 3-5% of shorts and bikinis but that's it

The thread tittle doesn't match what your post said. There is a lot more anime out there that doesn't have any fan service in it. 90% of my collection doesn't have it in it and I have a big collection. Because I think fan service is **** but hey people out there like it so whatever floats your boat I guess.

I like fan service too but,

Let's say your watchin a series that's good and there's no fan service in it yet and your in enjoying the story the animation the charecters the plot ect and your like half way though the series and then right out of nowhere they show you side boobs or girls changing or something like that, I throws me off of the story.

Also what should I change the title name too

As I think I've said in previous threads, my view on fan service is that I don't mind it in an anime when there is only a little bit of it. I don't mind it if there is lots of it and it is that kind of show. But I do dislike it when it is between the two, because you're not sure what the feel of the show is meant to be.

I've been watching Dog Days Series 2 recently, and this series has a lot more fan service than the first. To me it cheapens the first a bit.

I feel this way about HOTD. The zombie apocalypse part is mostly handled fairly seriously, but then SUDDENLY TITS AND PANTIES! Which kind of makes me cringe.

Ok to be honest the fan service in HOTD was awesome,
Blood, killing, slow mo, the fan service in that was hot the combo in that was excellent I wanted more it was really really good.

It'd be a bit unusual for a show to have a sudden change of pace like that though.

I'd assume the 'fan service' in such a case was rather being used to put over the sex appeal/character building rather than to throw the plot off.

HSOTD is certainly an odd one though, super serious end of the world stuff and then endless boobs, the boobs were always there ofc but the opening drama set the scene so nicely only for it to shift the tone.

I have to confess the only reason I bought and watched HOTD was for the tits and panties so it definitely works :s

It definately works

Though if you came into it blind the opening few episodes do have quite a serious tone

In initial D in the 2nd stage on the extra stage there a few scenes with heavy fan service. Which is unusual cause the 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th have no fan service what so ever. Yeah I know its extra eps but still

And rui as you know I love fan service but I also like a anime that takes a story seriously, for e.g. The counte of monte cristo I enjoyed it very much and it didn't have any fan service.

It's ok rui your not alone I liked the fan service in HOTD too

Ah extra eps, the kind that are disc only i'd assume to entice buyers. Thats a tricky one, you could always skip them as not part of the original release story if you know they are going to be fan servicey

I didn't know there was going to be any cause I didn't see any fan service in the previous eps and wasn't expecting any

I have no problem with fan service to be honest. The only problem I have is when a fan service show is quite frankly, crap (I really liked Highschool DxD but I find So I Can't Play H! To be absolute crap).

I do enjoy a good ecchi/harem show. When it crosses over into more serious shows though? I remember watching the the new Sword Art Online and the camera suddenly focused on a female character's butt while they discussed the murder of another player so I felt that didn't fit though.

Ultimately, if it suits the ton of the scene, then I have no problems with it, if it doesn't, it becomes irksome (but you could also say that about a forced fight scene, or a forced love confession).

Personally i have no problem with fanservice in anime and manga...
i just wish they'd licence the good fanservice manga's that i want to read in english...

Oh Sekirei, Sora No Otoshimono, Needless, why oh why can't you get a licence? *sadface*

Oh and yes, HOTD is awesome in all ways, just glad that one did get an english manga release as well as just the anime *grin*

Yeah hotd was a awesome combo

Hot chicks that's getting chased by mindless zombies ^_^

In violence jack there was rape nudity and what not and it's was part of the story and you don't feel it's being forced as fan service like today's fan service,

When it comes to fan service, I echo Joshawott's thoughts - there is a time and a place for panties, boobs and all that good stuff.

However, I think a lot of people are overlooking certain subtextual themes within some series that heavily feature extreme amounts of fan service. Underlying points and nuances that can be found within certain anime/manga series.

Highschool of the Dead seems to be a popular title in this thread so I'll start there. Once we strip away (excuse the pun) the story to its bare elements, what are we left with? A horror - a fight for survival for the good of not only the protagonists, but for the good of the species as a whole, against a staple of the genre the world over for the last half century, zombies.

The undead, too, are themselves in their own fight for survival. However, their existance depends on one of the most basic insincts - the need to feed. This is a but one side of the coin though, not only does it sustain the one doing the eating, it also, potentially, adds another tally to the number of zombies, thus further increasing their survivability as a population on the whole. I dare say that it could possibly be connotative of rape or slavery, being forced against one's will to help or bear the next generation of undead by becoming it.

But what has this got to do with fan service in the series? Well, think about it. Another basic instinct for an organism that isn't into meiosis is the act of reproduction also known as sex. This is naturally represented though the group of survivors, specifically the female members. Although we are never shown the act, it is not-so-subtly hinted at through the use of fan service and dialogue. Indeed, this isn't something exclusive to Highschool of the Dead - the use of sexually charged imagery and language to be symbolic of survival is a trope found throughout the horror genre of every media.

OTOH, the studios could just really like big boobages...

*nods*
That's why I absolutely love Elfen Lied. I see the nudity in that show as a way of showing the innocence of the female cast (iirc, following the personality split, we don't see Lucy naked do we? Yet we often see Nyu in the nude). Also, that completely contrasts with the amount of gore seen within the show (Which is mainly as a result of Lucy or Mariko, who as a result of their experiences, aren't pure and are rather damaged). So that creates two extremes that are symbolically relevant and also, things that sell xD

There is another side to fan service though, and that is that all fan service isn't just T&A. You could call gunsmith cats a fan service show for people obessed with guns. Infact every gundam has fan service in it (of more then one kind naturally) as showing mecha from every angle, showing every detail, is also a kind of fan service. So there will only ever be a few shows that can be classed as fan service free...and to be honest, as a mech fan, I'll probably never watch them :p

To end this though, I'll say that the guys making the anime will rarely do things without reason, and although you may not like the fan service, I'll be willing to bet there will be a couple of hundred+ fans who would argue against you.

Of course. It seems that for many viewers/readers, the de facto definition of fan service has become purely imagery that we find aesthetically pleasing sexually - be that panty shots, gravity defying breasts, or muscle bound men for the shonen-ai audience.

The point you bring up on Gunsmith Cats and gunplay fan service is a good one. Hell, gun service is just as much a feature of Highschool of the Dead as ecchi fan service. Another show that comes to mind is Black Lagoon - fan service galore, but more of one type than another.

You could argue that any element or trope of a show/genre that grabs a viewer's attention is a form of fan service. So to counter the thread's title: No, they shouldn't stop putting fan service in every anime, because without it, there wouldn't be any anime.
