The UK Anime scene in 2010 - Your Opinions

Revelation's problem is Funimation. Revelation are/were just distributing for them. Funimation told them what to do, what to release and when to release it. If they told them not to release something that was it, hands tied. The hiatus in 2008/9, and the one this year are Funimation telling them to stop. Why else would Revelation announce this current hiatus with the addendum that if fans want to know when their series will be completed, make a noise to Funimation, as they obviously don't know when they'll be allowed to release any more.

The world will be a lot better when Funimation (Navarre) grows up, as right now, they're in the business of getting all the toys and sitting on them, going nyah, nyah, nyah at everyone else. Of course it's sound business sense to get all the Region 2 Europe distribution rights, sit on them, and get as much direct cash from imports first.

Funi took all their toys away from MVM when they got bought out by Navarre, and gave them to Revelation (another Navarre company). Now they've taken them away from Revelation and aren't letting anyone play. I just hope Manga are big enough to have a 'don't screw with us' clause in their contract with 'em, although last year's last minute pulling of Always My Santa doesn't hint at that. Failing that, I'll just have to hope that Manga keep making enough money to keep the FuniMonster fed and happy.

The less said about their streaming service the better.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but bar a few remaining single volumes (which it's looking increasingly unlikely we'll ever see) isn't Revelation entirely done (or at least done for) with releasing anime anyway? The only things they ever released were Funi licences, and now those all seem to be going to Manga.

All that is outstanding is

V6 Peach Girl
V5, and 6 Beck
V5, and 6 Suzuka
V4, 5, 6 Hell Girl S1
V4, 5, 6 School Rumble S1

I'm hoping Manga at least pick the last two up, as they also have the option of further seasons to promote. But I don't hold out hope for the others.

There was also some noise earlier this year about the xxxHolic Tsubasa double feature, but I guess that was so much hot air.

Several FUNimation series they're releasing had the sign-subs track stripped from the volume, which makes watching the dub version difficult.

Hi Fudce

Could you elaborate on that, being a man who watches Dubs I'd be interested to know which titles your referring to.

Cheers

Romeo X Juliet
MVM already have it. They actually announced it before FUNimation did.

Initially I though WOOHOO! but then they will be releasing it over 6 parts, won't they...

It depends on how Madman do it in Australia. If MVM were to follow the US release, it would be in four parts, seeing as Funimation are sticking most of their (two cour) full length series onto four discs in full or half season sets. But as MVM use Madman masters, it depends on whether the Madman release is a four discs or six. Regardless of whether it is a boxset or not in Australia (Samurai Deeper Kyo is), MVM will probably release them as single volumes. Unless they change tack for next year.
Madman are releasing Romeo and Juliet in 2 half season sets, with 2 disks per set. So I assume MVM will be releasing it over 4 disks.

Not Fudce

but I can tell you it's a big problem on Ouran High School Host Club, less of a problem on Ghost Hunt

The Kiseki Films release of Gunbuster was apparently hardsubbed, cut and mastered off a VHS tape. I don't even call that a release, it might as well be a bootleg...
The video quality isn't too stellar when viewed close up, and the scene featuring the most nudity is edited. Aside those quibbles I'm nonetheless happy with it. Viewed from a distance on a TV screen, it still did justice to the series' visuals. A piece of music was removed from the R1 release owing to its similarity to the Chariots of Fire theme, said musical cue remaining intact in the old R2 version.
Realistically speaking though, searching for the R1 release would be more likely to bear fruit.

The 'sign subs' track is the track which translates only the onscreen text, not what is being said. It's encorporated into the subtitle track, but with recent Manga releases, even when the US release has a sign-sub track, they've opted to instead remove it, leaving the people who watch dubs to sit there with Japanese text on screen that we can't read.

I'd be willing to bet that's another thing we can blame on the BBFC, since AFAIK each subtitle track has to be rated seperately at extra cost (and presumably would mean it would take longer to rate).

Actually, if I understand it correctly, they can put the sign sub track through as a part of the english language version, and the subtitle/translation track through as the japanese language version.

Well, I guess I'm looking forward to the anime release of Monster over here. I'm not sure if there's any news of it being released over here, I certainly haven't seen any. It may be a case of ordering from the US.

Hmm, it would be nice to have Blood+ released over here because that is just mighty expensive in the US.

Other than that, I'm not too worried. I'll just go with the flow& see what gets released by UK companies.

and they're releasing X very soon, yet in the US they're about to receive the X remixes (again). I understand there are constraints to MVM and what they can do, but you don't want fans to purchase and feel cheated, and I did after buying Berserk.

Some info about MVM's X.

It's certainly not the original 8 disc release, but it isn't the US remix release either. They are releasing it on 6 discs, with remastered 5.1 English, but 2.0 Japanese for some reason. I've been watching the volume 1 check disc.

The discs are authored by Madman of Australia as you would expect.

Now here's the odd thing. The only Region 4 release of X I could find (It's bloody hard searching the Internet for 'X') was a remastered three disc Complete Coillection by Siren Entertainment in 2007, with stereo English and Japanese. Madman haven't released it yet. It may be we're getting it before they re-release it in Australia.

I don't know from remastered, but that 5.1 English track is definitely a positive sign, and for what it's worth. The visuals were pristine and very clean looking too (But the AODVD reviews of the original 8-disc X releases are very complimentary about the video quality, so that's neither here nor there)

Thanks for posting, I've been eager to hear some information about MVM's X release, but I think I will more than likely be waiting to hear about the US releases before deciding which version to pick up.

I think manga have done great this year and should keep it up.

I would like to see Beez bring their prices down a bit.

There are a few titles i would like to see but they may not be that realistic...
Higurashi - When They Cry
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Vampire Knight
Soul Eater
Samurai X the series
Natsume Yuujinchou

would like to see a re=release for Akira and Wolf's Rain as these are hard to find.

Man I'd given hope of that. I didn't even realise it was being released in the US. Thats definitely on my wish list.

Would love to see Manga Entertainment get this one. Fingers crossed.

I would like to see Manga Ent. license Vampire Knight, now that Viz have it - don't Manga have a deal with them or am I imagining that?

It'd be great to see Monster released by Manga. I'd love it even more if they just decided to release the complete set. Now that is just asking too much.

It's on my wish list for sure.

Some more blu-rays I would like to see,

Giant Robo
Love Hina
Ai Yori Aoshi
Mahoromatic - Automatic Maiden

Beyond this I would like to see Dragon Half, Gunsmith Cats and Battle Angel Alita get full series - short ova & films are not enough, they deserve better.

Also I don't want them edited to get a lower age rating.
