The old subject... Prices...

What do people think about the current fad for splitting seasons into two?

Like xxxholic?

thewhole ends up at about £30 but you get to spread the cost.

I was just looking up the Ouran High School Host Club sets at Play. Whereas xxxHolic RRPed at £24.99, OHSHC is RRPing at £19.99 for a thirteen episode 2-disc set. If it's anything like the Funimation Set, it will have extras as well, commentaries and whatnot.

It's pretailing at around £11.99, at least at Play. That could mean that you could get a whole 26 episode series, potentially with extras, for £24. Less than a quid an episode.

Damn that's cheap. It's cheap enough for me to start wondering if the actual value of the product is reflected in the price. For about a minute before I whip out my wallet.

1: "First adopter" buy the season disk at a time at £15-18 a disk. Total for a season, £90-110
2: "Box setter" buy the box set when it comes out. Total for a season, £50-90
3: "The sitter" wait for a price drop and then buy the season. Total for a season, £25-40
4: "Bargin hunter" wait for the box set to appear on blowout. Total for a season, £15-25

I can be all four, I used to be just one though but most series coming out these days suck/don't interest me so it's going to be the other three. Also, all my DVD collection is R2 and I won't listen to suggestions otherwise about getting R1.

That's certainly a bold thing to state. All I'll say is that you have quite a bit more faith in our domestic industry than I do.

I don't want to come across as ignorant, I've been with R2 since day one of buying anime DVDs since I was fourteen years old. I've been tempted before by R1 but I really would like to be one of the few (if any) R2 purists. The rate things are going with the anime industry in the UK I may one day have to switch to R1.

I am mainly a 1 on that list I just love all the R1 special edition singles. However I also fall into 2 and 3 for shows I may not be that anxious about getting hold of straight off the mark. Also for older shows I will just try and get them as cheaply as I can.

The new thing for releasing box sets and half seasons without the singles is not a bad thing in my view but it probably does make it harder for people on limited money if they are charging near single price per disc, but you get more episodes in one go which is always good. The bad thing for me is that there seem to be a lot of the unfinished ADV shows being released in March which means it it is going to be an expensive month, although it looks like less stuff I have not already got is coming in the next couple of months.

Out of what I've seen, the most highly rated older series not released in the UK is 'Now and Then, Here and There.' It clearly didn't do too great in yankland and, eve though it's one of the few 10/10 worthy series I've seen, it'll never see the light of day in the UK. I was lucky to get the sealed R1 box set after it went OOP on eBay...

As for Scrapped Princess, it's a blessing in disguise it wasn't released in the UK by Beez. Would you really want to pay £60 for DVDs with the worst shimmering ever? Unless Beez used the Madman masters, which lessened the shimmering quite a bit, then it'd be a complete waste of money. It's best just to get the cheap Anime Legends set.

I used to be a combination of 1&4 - buying individual volumes when released, but making sure I found the chaepest price to get them. It's rare for me to pay over £10 for a single disc, or £12 for a double disc set.

Now though, after feeling pretty shafted when these series get collected in a nicer boxed set almost straight away for roughly half the price I've paid, I imagine I'll move to collecting boxes.

I'll continue with single volumes only if they move to being better value double packs, or anre produced to a higher quality (more extras, better packaging, etc). My hatred of thinpacks isn't worth the extra money I'm spending. I can always get a high quality printer and a box full of empty cases. :p
