I think there's two factors regarding the British / English thing.
One: a lot of us realise how little coherant identity England actually has, as a result of being conquered, occupied, and the original culture destroyed by the Romans / Angles / Saxons / Normans / Vikings / Americans... If we did end up on our own we'd have no culture, and then we'd probably end up in a North / South civil war because almost every aspect of culture thought of as being 'English' is actually 'Londonian'.
Two: We don't want the last little part of the Empire (Britain itself) which actually gives us some standing in the world to be broken up. We don't want to be another insignificant little European country (Please Scotland, don't leave us! We don't want to be like Belgium!) as we like being part of 'Great Britain' which we still think is great, but far less Scots, Welsh and Irish do because of their different history.
Something I always find odd is how much anti English / British sentiment stems from Scotland, when it was actually the only country which joined up with us through choice. James VI / I, a Scottish King, was the one who came up with the idea for the UK in the first place!
@Memo - I'll agree with your stance on Chavs, but the only harm Emos do is to themselves.
