You'll notice a few of these kind of threads start poping up as we try to get more life backing to anime regions of this forum.

Anyway, Funimation. Every since the mid 00's (2004 to present) it has to be said, i've really enjoyed their licences and dubs, taking over from ADV as the dominante anime licence holder and probually now the most well know dubbers around.

However is it just me or does Funi seriously like taking the mikky of their own shows at times?

take for example the Sasami series 1 trailer

you could atleast expect the company who owns the rights to Tenchi now to pronounce her name right, never mind make it seem like the show is designed for little kids.

anyway rant over, so what's everyone elses opinion on the worlds leading Anime marketer?

Ugh.

I'm reasonably happy with Funimation these days. Cheap box sets; license rescues (Black Lagoon yay); shows like Mushi-shi and Darker Than Black; consistently decent dubbing; timely releases (generally every six weeks as opposed to the bi-monthly schedules favoured by other distributors); free streaming episodes on their and Youtube; and they listened to the fans and stopped using those God-awful, disc-scratching, enviromentalist-placating paper Viridian collections.
 
I hate their logo. And their name. Other than that I don't really know enough to form an opinion. A quick glance at my shelves tells me that all I own from Funi are the two Lupin III movie boxes, and I wasn't very impressed by either the dubs or the flimsy thinpack packaging (two discs to one thin case). They look really cheap, so it's a good job they were.
 
I thought their Lupin III dubs were poor. Dodgy British accents all round and didn't capture the feel of the original which is a big blow because the charisma of the Lupin voice cast is one of the main things that makes the show so entertaining. Other than that I think they have about as many good dubs as any other company. Very hit and miss.

Full Metal Alchemist would have been a decent dub but that kid who played Alphonse just cannot act to save his life. His voice was fine but he just couldn't carry any emotional weight.

you see i find any kind of trailer to an anime show always seems to bring it down for me. Nevertheless funimations' dubs and such have never been a problem for me, i've enjoyed school rumble, negima and rumbling hearts which i've seen. Yes a good director is needed in place for it to work, but it's also what actors they have in place for a certain character
 
I really like Funi as a licensor though I've never watched their dubs and tend to write off most trailers as awful in general (either they're thoroughly dubbed and therefore for the version I'll never see, or just the opening credits and possibly completely misrepresentative, or just flat out boring narrations/text screens of plot).

Overall though I'm happy Funi have stepped up and filled in the gaps in the R1 industry where the former frontrunners have fallen. They license a lot of stuff in different genres. I've honestly finished ADV's catalogue at the moment (with none of their "new" licenses doing anything for me at all and nothing old I still need at all) and without Funi there'd be a huge gap in my new purchases. Sojitz acquisitions and obvious comparisons notwithstanding they definitely have a very "golden era ADV" feel in some ways.

Funimation are the best dubbing company as of present, not like they have much competiton though considering ADV and Geneon crashed and died.
 
I'm generally a sub person, but the more recent funimation dubs actually surprised me: Not only can I listen to them without feeling like my ear drums are being gouged, but they're actually pretty good. I might even prefer the Black Lagoon dub to the original Japanese.

Still, the trailers are anywhere between weak to laughable. They remind me of the kind of trailers films got in the 1980's, and they nearly always miss the point.
 
I think you're getting them mixed up with ADV and it's only like that on the UK DVD's and only on the dub tracks. Chrono Crusade has that weird bathroom effect for some reason. Sounds like somebody just screwed up the audio transfer somehow.

Generally speaking I've found dubs on Bandai releases to be of high quality. Plantetes, Wolf's Rain, Stand Alone Complex and probably most notably Cowboy Bebop. There are exceptions as always though.

Geneon used a variety of dub studios, including New Generation Pictures, who are generally regarded as one of the best. Overall I'd say that the quality of their dubs was well above average, with Gun X Sword, Black Lagoon, and Ergo Proxy standing out as particularly impressive.

To be fair Sasami is designed for little kids. Short of having a few of the characters from Tenchi it has pretty much nothing to do with it. The characters may share certain characteristics of their Tenchi counterparts but are placed in an entirely different situation and environment. The show itself is a magical girl show aimed at girls of about 11 years old despite Tenchi Muyo's shounen leanings. I find the whole thing very strange even if it is quite a lot of fun.
 
Hum...I was assuming it was of the Nanoha age group (not that a child coul't enjoy Nanoha of course, the stuff that makes it that age group) mostly cuz of all the times Mihoshi totaly forgets to wear her trowsers.

Course this was based on episode 1, which was the only one fansubed...so yeah.
