Suggestions for a beginner?

Hello, I'm quite a beginner to anime and manga so I need a few suggestions on what to watch and read next.

I've already watched Death Note in subs, that was great. Also, I have read and watched naruto, which wasnt that great to be perfectly honest. Another manga I read was full metal alchemist, that was good, so I'm still collecting the manga books of that, and still reading.

I really liked death note, so if anyone could tell me something similar to that or in the same genre?

Although, as I'm quite new, I also would like to try alot of other different things. So if someone could recommend me some that they liked, and believe that its well worth watching.

I have a fair amount of money to spend, so I'm thinking about buying chapter 1's of what you suggest me, if it sounds good. And then, if I like it, I will maybe buy more ;D.

I'm looking mainly for manga, but I dont mind spending some cash on anime also ;p.

I forgot to add, I have had my eye on Basilisk for a while and I was wondering whether to buy chapter 1 of that, could anyone tell me if its worth getting?
 
Well I watched Death Note and love Ghost In The Shell. Thats worth a watch. Manga? Bleach, Zombie Powder and so far Claymore is quiet good too.

since its mainly manga, sorry i cant be much help, however anime wise you gotta try GITS ;)
 
I think you'll like Monster. It's suspenseful like Death Note, and well drawn too.

I really enjoyed the Basilisk anime but the manga's artstyle was a little less easy on my eyes so I didn't read that. It's an adaptation of some books I believe (there's a live action movie called Shinobi/Heart Under Blade rooted in the same mythos which has some big differences but also spoils a lot of the setpieces if you watch it before the anime) and spends more time on cool fights than character development, but somehow still manages to make quite a few characters charming anyway.

Blade of the Immortal and Berserk aren't really much like Death Note but they're both excellent manga you should take a look at if you can. Berserk's art starts out a little ropey but becomes amazing as it progresses.

What kind of genres do you like? Fantasy/sci-fi/history/action etc?

How about hellsing,it's got the dark themes that are used in deathnote along with some brilliant action scenes!I'll also second spyro's suggestion of bleach,which is one of the hottest series on the market right now.

I've read up on all of the anime's and manga's suggested and taken note.

Monster looks great, well, so does everyone of those mentioned ;D.

I have tried out bleach, its ok, but the story seems very repetitive to me, although, thats just my opinion ;P.

As for my genre's, I like pretty much everything. Although, I dont like much sci-fi / mecha.

Is there any ideas about things that dont fall into my genre's, but are still worth watching?

Finally, what about 'Hikaru no Go'? Someone told me it was by the same authors of death note, and that it might be my kind of 'thing'.

Its nothing like Death Note, only the art style is vaguely similar due to Takeshi Obata drawing both. Mind, Hikaru no Go is about the board game Go which on a basic level, is a Japanese version of chess and is actually, very, very good. I don't know much about the game itself but the animu was great throughout relying heavily on its characters. Its basic premise is "Character A is extraordinary, Whilst Character B receives power to be extraordinary - therefore rivalry commences. "

However, If you were to start it.. It is not released over here, and VIZ Media (being the dicks they are) cut off the volumes about ten something before the end in the US. They are also releasing the manga at a awe-inspiringly slow pace.

Monster is generally high regarded highly. Its generally more complex than Death Note. Again, This would be hard to see the animu but VIZ are still releasing it via their Signature range of adult books.

I know this is very subjective, But, Bleach is just a bad version of Naruto. If you want to go for one of the "big three" of Shonen Popularity, I recommend One Piece - Since its genuinely the best. The premise might not sound -that- great, but, Its AMAZING.

Funimation have just started releasing the series on DVD in America, VIZ release the manga and has one of the most annoyin' changes in it, reminiscent of a prior bad anime holder (4Kids) so there are name changes, and such.
 
I second Jayme's suggestion of One Piece. For manga I would recommend the Shaman King manga since it has a a great storyline. and for other anime I recommend Lucky Star since it has loads of humour and also has loads of reference to other manga,anime and video games
 
I'd advise you not to go for Excel Saga, Lucky Star (anime) or anything similar in the comedy/slice of life genre. There's usually a lot of anime references in them that you may not understand until you've watched them. Only otakus can be entertained by an otaku (via Konata - Lucky Star). XD

But remember those titles for when you have watched a few shows and read some mangas. They are classic. (Best buy now, watch later kind of thing).
 
Bleach (i know its already been mentioned but its a good manga)

Blood sucker (vampire hunter orientated manga, lots of violence)

GITS (Ghost In The Shell, both the Anime and Manga are brilliant if you enjoy Anti-terrorist unit/detective department orientated Anime/Manga)

Buso Renkin (sword fights, altho i havent had time to personally read the manga it looks good)

OR if your looking more at Shonen styled manga then theres:

M.A.R (based on a boys adventures in a fantasy world, includes amusing characters and fight scenes)

.Hack// (a Online RPG influenced manga/Anime, has comedy and action)

Naruto (ninja styled comedy about a aspiring ninja who has a demon intombed in his body since birth and strives to become the strongest ninja possible [Hokage] )

One Piece (comedy regarding a teen pirate who ate cursed friut and gained stretchy powers, lots of good adventures in both the Anime and Manga)

If you look in your local Waterstones and just flick through a few manga volumes or look at Anime in DVD stores, then there should be something to spark interest :)

That is the exact reason why they are so crappy. Good comedy requires little to no knowledge.
 
I commend you for wanting to try something different from what you've already read. I've not read Death Note myself, but if you really do want to try some different manga...

Read through some or all of those, and you'll get a pretty good idea of which direction you want to take your fandom in. There are some very different types of manga in that list, some good, some very good.
 
I would go for Last Exile. The first anime series I watched. Its got plot and good action. You can't go far wrong with it really and the boxset is cheap online at the moment.

Opinions lol... if that were really the case, humour would translate perfectly between languages and cultures.
That aside...

Just a few quick mentions - Monster & 20th Century Boys are pretty good suspence/thrillers, Berserk & Blade of the Immortal are graphic choppin' things up, Nausicaa and Buddha are solid adventure series, Yotsuba&! & GTO are two very different but very funny comedies, Fruits Basket is shoujo stuff, Rurouni Kenshin is shounen stuff, and Saikano is romance.

Monster as people have said.

Liar Game, Mirai Nikki have similar aspects to Death Note. But those are not complete yet, and not for sale here, but I read them as scanlations. <3 them.
 
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi Is a good choice as it has bits of everything in it.

I loaned my copy to a few friends in work that had the usual - "It's all porn and Pokemans isn't it?" - attitude, and they totaly loved it. One of them even started borrowing other series off me, such as Hellsing, Gits:Sac 1 and 2, and has even started nicking some of my manga series too. All because of Abenobashi. :D

I love all of those series!!! gunsmith cats is one of my favourites as well. Actually gunsmith cats was my second manga series, after akira and my third was Oh my goddess...

As many people already said, it depends on what kind of things you like. Hikrau no go is awesome, I've seen that first and then moved to death note. not sure it works otherwise and in a certain way, it's awesome, it is like they decide to do a show about chess and get people really interested in it. it's enjoyable even if you never heard of Go before.

Twelve kingdoms, slayers, Read or Die, samurai deeper kyo, AKIRA, Samurai X and metropolis would be my picks. Most of them are good manga and animes. Hunter X hunter is also good.
