Sub vs Dub

when the subbers place some Japanese word in the sentence instead of english and you're all "Wait, what?"

I agree with that. They stick in a Japanese word and a explanation of the word pops up on the screen but it comes and goes so fast that you have to track back and find out it says something stupid like 'bento is japanese for lunchbox'. Why not just say lunchbox??

I do however prefer watching things in the original language though I will try out dubs. If the dub is high quality (like Cowboy Bebop) then i'll just watch it through with that. However if it's dubbed by ADV (which I think are one of the worst dub teams) then I'll give the dub a miss. The ADV dub for Excel Saga nearly made me write off the show it was that bad. Thank got I caught an episode of it fansubbed. The dub for Eva was so over the top at time's it just came over as a comedy.

With the exception of Cowboy Bebop, which I’ll take my hat off to, I can’t stand dubs. They range anything from bad to horrific and no one will ever convince me that the western voice actors even take the task particularly seriously. You only have to listen to one of the episode commentaries on virtually any series to find them taking the piss out of the story and characters. Furthermore, it seems to me that there are only about a dozen different va’s employed in the states and Monica Rial manages to get a lead role in nearly everything!

As for ‘missing the artwork’ while reading the subs, well I’d argue that the original cast are a part of the art of the show anyway and by listening to the English dub track you are missing an artistic element of the film or series altogether.

Yeah, totally, I mean, when people go to conventions and speak to VAs about some big anime, for example... One Piece, the FUNi VAs are really passionate about doing a good job on the series, but the dark reality is they're pretty much lying and going against their word and put up the WORST job possibly, I get what you're saying with that, mayn.

Subs are what i would usually go for, though with a few series, such as Full Metal Panic, Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon, i watch the dubs as well, since they work brilliantly.

What makes them that bad? I must say, although I have only watched a small number of things, the dubs have always been fine. At the moment I am watching Ranma 1/2 and there is nothing wrong with the dub at all.

If you only ever watch dubs you shouldn't be able to find a fault with them.

Also it occasionally comes in turns of what voices you watched first.

I usually always watch a dub first.Very rarely do I find faults with them if im truthful.Then I have a go at the subbed version.Having a favourate out of the two really does come down to what i feel fits the anime better,or more so the characters.For instance i adore the Trigun dub,and would never watch the sub.

Despite having favourates for certain animes,either really do not bother me.Though i may prefer one over the other when a certain series is concerned,im deffinately not one of those people who hate all dubs or something.

Okay, I’ll admit that I may have watched mainly ADV dubs early on and formed my strong dislike of dubs in that early stage. So I suppose I have tarred every dub with the same brush and all that, but it’s too late now and I’m sticking to my stubborn sub guns.

Plus subs are educational. I know at least 9 random Japanese words that are of little or no use to me whatsoever!
