ADV Films have hooked up with video-streaming website crunchyroll to offer fans an absolutely free viewing of their (English dubbed) satirical dark comedy Welcome to the NHK, an anime series about the struggles of a young male hikikomori in Japan ("reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from their social lifes, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement"). You can stream the first two episodes, for free and without registration, on crunchyroll at the moment, with a further two being added every week.

What's the point when most of the series is already out on R1? I can understand companies doing it with shows that aren't out on DVD like Druaga, but this?

The point is providing a legitimate channel for people who might be interested in the series to watch it and sample it. This might inspire some of those to actually buy it.

They mentioned they are also doing it because CrunchyRoll is their target audience, and I actually agree. 90% (possibly higher) of the members on CrunchyRoll and others don't purchase anything and this might be a good way to reaching out to them.

..Anyway, I love the series and I've heard good things from the dub of it, But I'll be getting the DVDs from ADV when they are released.

If people are happy not paying for anime, why would they suddenly turn around and decide to start, just because of this? =/

I really like welcome to NHK but I found the dub a little disappointing.

Chris Patten is playing Satou who has maddening amounts of monologue. Unfortunately he only has one voice and it sounds not unlike Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer.

Crunchy Roll is Okay, but I want DVDs with subs please!

I adore this series. ♥ Now if only the region two DVDs would come out. Although, I'd feel fairly awkward buying them over the counter, with the covers they have, hah.

That's precisely why I'll be buying them off the net  I hate it when western distributors give them missleading covers like this, makes everything look like hardcore porn.

As for the dub, I'm also quite disappointed. Seems like some severe miscasting - Chris Patton seems to have a narrow acting range. He was okay as Sousuke Sagara, but he doesn't bring across Satou's character too well.

mm, I believe the original japanese releases had similar covers...

Guess my beef is with cover designers in general then. You could call it self-parody given the nature of the series, though frankly average Joe isn't going to get that

To be fair, The average joe wouldn't be buying a show which relies heavily on the otaku culture. ;p People rage when covers are changed, anyway... Reversible covers may be the answer.

utterly ridiculous

Wow, I read so much sh-t about myself and fellow actors on the internet, and 99 perecent of the time I can blow if off, but when I read something this ignorant and ridiculously biased, I have to respond.

Honestly, do you think somebody with over 20 years of Theatrical training, and who has worked in the VO business for over nine years has a voice that sounds like Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer? I'm sure you thought you were being quippy and cute, but anybody who's ever heard me speak knows what a ridiculously hyperbolic statement that is.

And yes, I'm going to go ahead and mention here that several different publications named me Voice Actor of the Year for that peformance that you found so "synthesized", so perhaps the problem is in your perception.

I'm disgusted that I'm even replying to a quote on a message board, but I , literally, have never read such a ridiculously stupid criticism about one of my performances.

Use your brain and some discretion the next time you cirtique something.

no thanks,
Chris PattON... yeah, and try spelling my name right the next time you accuse me of sounding like a speech synthesizer, as well

I highly doubt this is "chris patton".

Why would a actor bother to do this, seriously? Why would he come onto a anime forum, correcting peoples spelling, when he hardly is a dictionary himself? And most of all, why would he ruin his reputation, and put his work at risk by being a moron to his fans? Whoever you are, your pretty much a failure. If you are chris patton, you should try be more professional in your work. If you aren't chris patton, which I hardly doubt, then grow up, and find something to do; Have you got nothing to do other than impersonate others on the internet?

that or it reminds me of the "Luke Perry is gay" episode of family guy where he has nothing better to do than check all the websites for his name

Come on guys, show some respect. The fact chrispatton has actually responded to the criticism here just goes to show he's passionate about what he's doing. Whether or not you like his performance in NHK, don't have a go at him just for daring to stand up for himself. Of course, I don't blame him for responding like that, after all, seeing your name dragged through the gutter on the internet isn't nice.

I agree wholeheartedly with that. Having seen the first episode dubbed I actually thought it was actually very well done. Anime forums are full of a-holes who seem to think it is clever to knock dubs regardless of their quality, probably never having listened to whatever dub they happen to complain about. Good on Chris for defending himself, I say.
