Spring Streaming Announcements

I haven't watched Crunchyroll for months now. But the tantalizing prospect of all the shows I could be watching stops me from unsubscribing. I'm terrible.

I've finally motivated myself into checking the website out and it seems to me to be a damn good deal for £4.99 a month. The only downside I can see is they don't get all the shows and I'd suspect I might not find time to actually watch things. It's hard enough finding time to do certain things now without adding a massive catalogue of Anime to the mix :p

New Spring Title: YUYUSHIKI

We will be launching YUYUSHIKI tomorrow, April 9, 2013, at 1:00pm Pacific Time, available for audiences in the following territories: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, and Scandanavia.

YUYUSHIKI is based off of a four-panel gag by Komata Mikami. It follows the lives of three high school girls in the data-processing club: Yuzuko Nonohara, played by Rumi Okubo, who also starred in YuruYuri as Chinatsu Yoshikawa, Yui Ichii, voiced by Minami Tsuda who was Yui Funami in YuruYuri, and Yukari, whose voice actress Risa Taneda was Kaoru Asoi from Oreshura.

“Yuzuko, Yui, and Yukari, three girls who just started high school in spring, are always together. After school, the three of them attend their own "Data Processing Club" with two computers and a whiteboard between them, searching for random words on Google and then discussing the results. Their day to day life is mostly uneventful, mainly only consisting of girls flirting, but for some reason it's difficult to tear one's eyes away from this new generation of high school girls' communication. Their cute, laid-back high school lives are defined by hanging out, club activities, and occasional hints of yuri. Au uneventful, good life - that is their "yuyushiki" (rule)”)/quote]

Funi has Attack on Titan, also confirms that the anime will be 25 episodes.
Interesting seeing as the rights were apparently being held back. Whilst I don't really care about streaming, I wonder if it will be available here.

It is! Crunchyroll will stream it.

Far and away, one of the most asked questions of the spring 2013 anime season has been “Is Crunchyroll going to stream Attack on Titan?” Now the truth can be told…and the answer is “YES!”

The latest jewel in the Production I.G crown, based on the manga by Hajime Isayama, begins broadcasting on Crunchyroll Sunday afternoon starting on April 14, with final time to be announced on Sunday. Free users will be able to view one week after initial broadcast.

Story:

"Many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!"

Attack on Titan will be available to Crunchyroll viewers in the following territories: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland.

You may now begin dancing in the streets and hugging strangers!i/quote]

Wow, it's not often that licenses get handed out to more than one company for streaming. And thank heavens this one has been!

If only somewhere could get A Certain Scientific Railgun S for legal streaming to the UK. Not having the previous seasons didn't stop AOD from getting To Love Ru Darkness.

Hopefully both Crunchyroll and FUNimation having Attack On Titan points at a future when we aren't doomed to never see shows FUNi has streaming rights too. I always wonder why that is anyway; could it be just because no company feels like getting the rights to shows FUNimation has, or do they get the UK streaming rights too and just sit on them?

It was implied at some Expo panel that it was the latter. They used to occasionally stream to the UK, which adds some weight to that idea, but now they only support the True English-language Market and ignore us.

If they only take US rights, it's possible that CR/Kaze don't see it as worthwhile to go after UK rights only since we're such a small [legal] market and their core audiences are elsewhere.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaame. Seems so odd that FUNimation won't let streaming to the UK when they have the rights for it, considering that surely there'd be no additional costs if they had the rights anyway? Surely with ad support on their sites and stuff, it would actually only mean more viewing figures and more money?

Maybe Anime-On-Demand should start getting close to FUNimation then.

I believe that the five people who would watch something legally from the UK don't generate enough ad views to make ad-support from the US viable (US advertisers don't like wasting their money advertising to us so they need to find a UK sponsor and they can't show enough interest for anyone to go for it). It's despicable if it's true and they still block us from their paid EVS subscription channel, though.

If they'd talk to other streaming sites (though AoD has no revenue model at the moment either!) it would help. Or if they lose the right to be exclusive as with Titan, which is a more than acceptable compromise :D

It does seem odd for Attack on Titan to be split between the 2, with Crunchyroll having it for us. Also if the general idea was for Crunchyroll just to have it so it's in the UK - why not Anime On Demand?

Can't help but think that it's another point possibly to add to:
Myself on ANN Forums said:
To be honest, i'm expecting AoD to die at the moment - their domain is due to expire next month (that could of course mean nothing), given the fact that Problem Children is still up to episode 6, we've had no communication for the past few months and Andrew is focusing on Anime Limited.
Then again maybe it is due to the general dislike of Funimation's player which is why Crunchyroll also have it.

Skipped over in the Titan joy...

Crunchyroll to Stream "HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat" Anime

YES! Another new show announcement from issues forth from Crunchyroll! Starting Sunday, the intriguingly titled HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat joins the spring anime lineup.

Known in Japan as Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko, HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat is set to broadcast every Sunday, starting on April 14, 2013 at 6:30am Pacific Time for its premium members, and April 21 for free members.

Background and story

HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat - is based on the original light novel of the same name, known in Japan as Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. It was written by Sou Sagara and published in Japan by Media Factory Publishing, winning the 6th MF Bunko New Face Award. The anime series is being directed by Youhei Suzuki, who also directed The Familiar of Zero anime, and is being animated by J.C. Staff, whose other works include Little Busters! and Hayate the Combat Butler.

“Youto Yokodera is a high school sophomore whose mind is filled with base desires, but after praying at the statue of a stone cat, he finds that all of his inner thoughts are spilling from his mouth! On the other hand, Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi wishes that she would not display her real intentions so readily, and ends up completely unable to show any sort of emotion. Their wishes having been warped by the stony cat statue, a wandering tale of youth between a bright pervert and a curt girl is about to begin!”

HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat - will be available to Crunchyroll’s audience in the following territories: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. S/quote]

Also to add, there's been a Q & A about Japan's Daisuki service....

A. DAISUKI.net will not have a paid subscription system. Some premium content may be fee-based but basically you can watch anime for free. Also, DAISUKI.net will offer an online shop with exclusive goods and opportunities for fans to give feedback to Japanese production companies directly. By doing so we want to build up an exchange between overseas fans and creators in Japan.

A. Basically all content (except for some content) will be free. You can register as a user – the membership is free as well.l/quote]

It's FREE!

Suddenly I'm feeling a whole lot more enthused about this.

I think the Japanese companies realise that they need to do this to end illegal fansubs, and offer a gateway to the drug that they want to sell, Expensive Blu-rays and Merch.

Makes a lot of sense. Let people watch the shows for free, then show their support by buying the physical products (media/merch).

They still do on YouTube (although that included none of last season's simulcasts). Their newest full series unlocked for the UK IIRC were the first season of Haganai (but not the second), C3 and they also have a couple of episodes for Jormungand and Sankarea. Most recently they've added AMG: Flights of Fancy.

Here's a list I've been working on: http://miyuki.thenexxus.org/wiki/YouTube

Their Geneon licenses tend to be locked - and that includes any trailers and clips they have put up for Index and Railgun

Speaking of Index/Railgun, considering how at first MangaUK seemed quite keen on licensing them, then backed out saying that the rights were owned by Universal, I guess that's because Starz and Universal are competitors?

I think Universal are a little too big to be considered competitors. From what I recall, it's that Universal requires a degree of disclosure about company performances in contract negotiations that Starz is unwilling to accomodate.

Uh-huh *pretends to understand the ins and outs of it*.
