Optimum Releasing are, according to Play.com, planning a special edition of Hayao Miyazaki's landmark anime movie Spirited Away. While no special features have been revealed as yet, the release date is set for 9th May; the same month as Optimum’s expected DVD release of Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns. More news on this as we hear it.

Interesting. The "standard" edition wasn't half bad, so it'll have to be pretty special to warrant the often abused "Special Edition" label many DVD releases in general get. :)

i agree. the version i have had a whole extra disc brimming with extras, so it will be interesting to see how they can possibly top that. actually, it kinda annoys me when companies bring out special editions of stuff i already have - you end up paying full RRP for a few extras if you're not careful.

After speaking with Optimum, they said they are "... looking for more bonus material at the moment so can't confirm what will be on the disc."

Who knows what they can dig up, perhaps even a commentary track with Jonathan Ross? Hopefully some original features will be produced though... I'll probably be buying this edition since I don't own a copy of Spirited Away yet.

If the extras on this are decent, I'll definitely pick it up; I only have the R2J so far, and I'd like to get a copy with the dub (which I've only seen once, and can't remember much about).

The dub's pretty good actually. i still don't know how they can improve on thextras - a commentary track or two is the only thing i can think of.

Special editions of DVDs are often (and certainly in this case by the looks of things) a cynical way of rekindling sales of a film. They can't relaunch a DVD that's already on the market so they just add a few things and put it out with different packaging. The original Spirited Away DVD had an extra disc of extras, I very much doubt that whatever they add to this one will be worth another £15 or whatever. Fair enough if you don't already own it though (for shame :) )

Indeed, I do find it a bit odd why they're doing this release; my 2 disc DVD for it was only £8.99 as well! I doubt I'd purchase it, seeing as I'm quite satisfied with the edition I've already got.

Got my copy for exactly the same price, and I'm well chuffed with it.

Someone mentioned maybe something like a Jonathan Ross commentary track. I'd quite like that. I know the geezer is a love-him or hate-him type of guy, but I'm in the former camp. He'd be well up for it I bet.

Sorry about that. Just expanding on an interesting idea... :D

Maybe they should add something like a plushie as well  Always gets me interested, I only have one Spirited away plush (that white turnip looking dude with the red pants on, begins with an O and ends in Sama - his name!).

There's always more room for extra features, looking at the Japanese Ghibli releases there's all kinds of stuff they could put on it, in depth documentaries about Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli, the impact of anime on western culture, finally letting me see a subbed version of the ghibli theme park featurette...sure it will be a cash-in but if it's half way decent it's well worth it to get more people into anime - those that don't own it already.
Alternately, they may go fo the more tradition 'special edition', a box with things like art cards, a film cell, soundtrack CD, art book etc.
When Mononoke was first released here the first few came with a book about Miyazake written by Helen Macarthy (sp?)

I already own the US version, but I'd be very interested in this, even if only as a present for my girlfriend (so I can watch the extras!).
