so.... A world without nukes....

unless you've been hiding under a rock the past week or so, you'll of heard of Obarma's no nuke ideal world.

As much as i'm sure everyone would love that world to exist, i really don't see it happening, atleast no time soon.

It just seems like somthing from an anime, Nukes are embolished, and suddenly another country invades with giant robots :D

so what's your thought? think it will happen? or is the Star Wars project now more important than ever?

I think its a nice idea and something to work towards, as for it actually happening...we'll see. You can probably damage a country just as much without using them nowadays anyway

I like to think this could only be achieved by substituting nuclear devices for anti-nuclear defence systems, able to neutralise any incoming warhead, but not capable of being used to attack others.
Of course, idealised scenarios are seldom what one can fullheartedly expect from the powers that be.

I believe that they will get rid of nukes when AT-Field tech is available...

It doesn't have to be too far-fetched. Today's (allegedly failed) satellite launch by North Korea caused those concerned to have anti-missile technology at the ready.

I can't see this happening anytime soon, either, but at least Obama has taken the first step. The goal is now a world without nukes and we can at least start moving towards that goal. It'll take a very, very long time (probably longer than our lifetimes) but at least he's got the ball rolling :]

I'm not sure it's such a big deal. It would be good from the point of averting any future nuclear wars, but then we've had no nuclear wars in the past 60 years that nukes have been around anyway (MAD and all that) yet we've still had some pretty horrific conflicts during that time.

I certainly think new nukes are a massive waste of money for us here in the UK though. Money which could be better used for just about anything else.

At least this policy is helping to move the United States further away from the "Do as we say, not as we do" attitude of previous administrations, and we do have Obama to thank for that.

*climbs out from under a rock*

To be perfectly honest....i don't see this happening for anothe 50-100 years.

Nukes will probably become old hardware when they start using satellites as weapons and not just reconnaissance....i mean google earths invasion of privacy on the whole world was only up for a short time before people realised they can see themselves in their houses from space...so i expect that they'll use them as weapons one day.

i guess there's just one thing that we must all keep in our minds.....

*Luton Won Wembley* ;)

Well, it depends... To my knowledge, having "the bigger guns" as a show of force is a deterrent for war, since the smaller countries dare not attack the super powers with nukes, while the super powers themselves (who have nukes) are just flexing their millitary might. A fight between 2 nuke powers will only cause massive damage to both powers, and neither of them want to be weakened.

So unless the nukes become a sorry-thing-of-the-past and outdated technology, they're going to stay in my view. There will probably come a time for that though, but doesn't mean the next stage of tech isn't going to be more devistating than the nuke (hard to imagine, huh?)

So yeah, if nukes are forgotten about and we have a more humane/still powerful weapon in place, I think the worlds may consider Obama's attempts. But I dont see a WMD-free world (although I wish for it.)

I too would like it to happen, although all of the countries that posess nuclear weapons and such will obviously hide one or two somewhere.. just to be safe.

They will do little broadcasts showing how they disposed of them, and then reveal small amounts of evidence based on it, but there will still be some hiding somewhere. If this were to happen then this would leave the countries that disposed of theirs at a huge disadvantage.

By the way...either a MGS or a Gundam suit will come out of a world with no nukes,

Nah we don't have the tech for things like that, and there's still practabiblity issues with bipedal machines. It's a nice thought though  (although with mobile suits it would bring tech for space colonies which would bring with it a calamity far worse then a single nuke, gundam fans will know what i'm talking about)

I'm not so sure the MAD theory is going to work when it comes to states like North Korea and Iran. The theory is based on rationality, and I doubt how reasonable Islamic extremists and Stalinist dictators are ...

don't be so sure, they've made a working mecha already in japan, sure it's no where near a war weapon, but it's a start.

Does that include a laptop that walks itself? I would pay to see something like that. :p
