Shows that get better with rewatching, shows that get worse.

Just Passing Through

The Wildcard
How often do you rewatch anime? Have you ever changed your opinion about them?

Cromartie High School was never my favourite anime, but the first time I did raise a smirk or two at some of the jokes. The second time I watched it, it was a great cure for insomnia.

Similarly when it comes to comedy, a show that I loved the first time around was Excel Saga, I laughed out loud through 26 episodes of mirth. The second time I tried desperately to remember what was funny about it, but I just couldn't.

Conversely, the first time I saw Disgaea I must have been in a humour vacuum, but the second time I found it to be charming and silly.

One show that definitely gets better with age for me is Lunar Legend Tsukihime. The first time I thought it was a load of pretentious twaddle, hopping on the 'vampires are kewl' bandwagon. But I've since seen it four times, and it has got better with each watch. It's one of my fave shows now.

Hmm...

Bleach season 2 doesn't get better with a rewatch, mainly because we know Aizen's evil from the start!. Similarly, I find other anime with similar sudden plot twists fail to captivate me when it comes to a rewatch

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED...What did I think was so great about it? I brought the Anime Legend collections, and can't get past episode 10; the story is predictable, and the voice acting is pretty jarring at times.

While not a "show", Studio Ghibli films never go stale. I've probably watched The Cat Returns dozens of times, and I still love it.

However, no matter how many times I watch Azumanga Daioh, I love it.

Planetes gets better with every viewing.

Watched Suzuka, enjoyed it first time but couldn't even get myself through it the second time..

^Still need to watch Planetes, good to know I have a treat in store!

I don't really rewatch many shows though so I can't really say if feel any get better or worse. Although I would imagine there certain shows that are just timeless.

I didn't really rewatch Trigun all the way but I watched the first half of it in maybe 2004 and then watched it all until the end in 2008(I have no idea why it took me so long), and I loved it all as much as when I first saw that first half, so I can't really imagine it ever wearing off for me.

Apart from that I can't think of another series I've rewatched properly. Wouldn't mind rewatching Bebop though, its been too long.

Code Geass R2 annoyed me on first watch because of the flip-change in Zero for the last few eps, second time round in context of Zero requiem it was much better.

Best shows to rewatch:
Kanon,
Air,
Higurashi,
all twists that make you look at it from a differnt perspective.

I watched Geass R2 befrore season 1, I view them as unrelated series. R2 is still a glorious trainwreck, though not as awsome without all the speculation and leaks of next week's plot etc.

I still don't get all the trainwreck stuff =/ I mean you've got to admit that the first half at least was still pretty solid.
1/4, maybe. Even then they'd got to adding extra characters nearly every week and constantly upgrading mecha/ bringing out stupid special weapons.

Ep 12 was the this show is now officialy a complete farce point.

I've really struggled with Elfen Lied with rewatching. First time was cool, but the revelations really put me off. Tried to watch it again a couple of months back but just didn't get anywhere.

Fantastic Children was the same - really trying to figure things out on first watch, but all the reveals were a bit of a letdown and I never really felt like watching it again.

On the flipside, Azumanga Daioh was alright first time through, but after a few more rewatches, I think I understand the humour more and laugh rather harder :p

And of course the 'brain bursters' - Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent. There is just so much happening that the first time I watched it I barely scratched the surface (And in the case of Lain, the art bothered me) but rewatching and delving deeper into the plots, all three have improved in my opinion immensely - all are amongst my favorites now.

id say the first time i watched gurren largann with out the spoils was probably the greatest thing iv ever seen and the second time you watched it you wish they'd made the series a lil longer like putting something between the month before the attached tempplin or the 7 years before the anti spirals e.g (Nucleotide: The Aftermath of Lordgenome by Zaru) on gurren largann fan fiction. its a good story they should of made it in to this after the tempplin attack .

I thoroughly enjoyed rewatching Paranoia Agent recently. Also any Gundam shows I have rewatched. Warmaster reminds me that I really need to watch Lain again, although I am looking to get the BD set before I do. Cowboy Bebop was still very good on rewatch, also Haruhi.

This is also something I like for rewatch factor. People will often bemoan rewatching "twist" shows as you don't have the surprise factor any more, but the knowledge of what's to come often provides wonderful dramatic irony to earlier proceedings.
