My answer to the topic.

Yeah, i never got a chance to see some of their titles (PPD for example) But thankfully i got alot of the titles i wanted from their releases before they went bust (seriously hunt down kinos journey if you haven't already, very thought provoking and you'll feel all philisophical afterwards, i think coyote ragtime show was one of ADV's too, i enjoyed this. only 12 eps, 3 discs but well worth the time to watch, reminded me of cowboy bebop strangely enough.)

I'd imagine its abit complicated for MvM to decide, i mean the ADV titles have already been sold by ADV, there's a chance that there are fans (like myself) who have some of the ADV releases but missed others, but there's always the other fans who probably already have the titles, so won't buy them again.

Its all about if there's demand or not, if enough people wanted something then they are more inclined to produce another batch of copies, otherwise - no.

Need to remember what they said at one of the expos, something about having to spend so much to get it through the BBFC, then more money to make 1000 dvds, then they have pay retailers like HMV to sell it, then we buy it, but the modern day anime fan doesn't want to pay £10 for a dvd with 4 eps on it, and unfortunately there's the internet to contend with, fansubbing and the like :/

Its annoying, it really is. but thats how things are.

Rescues have much less BBFC fees, just need to pay a renewal fee on the existing certs. The big cost has never been BBFC fees, it's making the PAL dvd masters.
Fansubbing is older than the western licencing indstry as we know it is. They've always had to compete with it, the main issue is it advanced faster than the legit releases, due to being held back by Japanese companies who still run on a bussines model we largely abandoned with VHS tapes.

I swear I heard that once a show has been though the BBFC it didn't have to go though it again?
You have to pay if it switches licensors, I think.
Changing anything needs a new cert. say if the original had dubtitles and you want real subs. Also uncuting stuff.
Also different video source would need one, hence early dvds using VHS masters.

Wondering if it's why Wings of Honeamise has never been reissued here, that have cuts for the rape scene? So they'd have to use the VHS masters.

On face of it seems a good idea, which is worth at least exploring at the very least.

But do the ADV encoded pal material even exist anymore? MVM already use MADHOUSE Pal and other Australian Distributors encode material anyway. Wouldn't it be better simply just carry on releasing shows from them instead of searching and going through the minefield of legal issues of getting ADV encode material?
