Sentai Filmworks 1080i Blurays

So, after receiving the BD drive for my PC today I shoved in Sentai's release of Penguindrum Part 1.
My god... I would personally say it's borderline unwatchable, and definitely will not be buying the second part - or any other 1080i releases for that matter. Seriously, until you see it in motion you have no idea how bad it is. The screengrabs make it look much better than it is.
Extreme example here, but this is pretty much what you get every time something moves on screen.

Truly Shocking, for a while I thought maybe it couldn't be as bad as people were saying, afterall who would think they'd do such a bad job?

Wow. That is bad; glad I cancelled my pre-order of Sentai's Mysterious Girlfriend X, would hate to watch it with that kind of quality.

Thankfully my TV takes care of those interlacing effects, but yeah, it looks really ghastly next to the Japanese source, especially on a computer. Everyone needs to complain at Sentai for doing this as much as possible, because even if people only buy UK discs it's going to end up cropping up here when we share production runs with Sentai-made Australian discs if we don't make a lot of noise about it. I'd much rather compromise on price or timing than pay a BD premium for...that.

(I know a few people always counter my points about quality by saying it's better than paying more, but when it's a more expensive BD version there's no reason to produce it in the first place if it isn't going to look decent...)

Siren Visual authored their Penguindrum Blu-rays locally, and anecdotally the video quality is an improvement over Sentai's even though they are still 1080i.

It is possible to get fair to decent 1080i transfers, Castle of Cagliostro was watchable.

EDIT: Link to info about Siren's Penguindrum
