Sales Technique

There are two things I think about when buying uk releases. The first is how long will it take to get released here, if it does at all, this alone can make me import. The second is, has the anime been censored. I hate it when I find that they have censored parts of anime here but it can easily be imported from America uncensored.

Name 1 anime released in the last decade that has actually been censored and isn't Paranoia agent.

And how can you be sure the anime from the US hasn't been cut?

Urotsukidoji series. They edited out some of the erect non-demonic penises, & rather poorly on occasion too.

Don't blame the anime companies for that - blame the regulatory bodies. And seriously moaning about Hentai being cut is like moaning that an Emo has been cut.

The major (laughable really, since they're all small) UK anime companies will never cut or edit an anime release from what is available in America for the simple reason that it's cheaper to use the US version than to edit things.

Off the top of my head, there have been some instances where the UK has got different to US, outside of Hentai:

-Paranoia Agent vol3 lost 80 seconds due to compulsary cuts from the BBFC (Cuts required (on potential harm grounds) to the sight of a child attempting to hang herself, and accompanying subtitles. Cuts in accordance with the Video Recordings Act 1984)
-Angelic Layer vol2 had to have a few seconds of the commentary track rerecorded to remove the word "retard", which would have raised the certification to 12 (the rest is PG).
-Millenium Actress and Ghost in the Shell 2 gained dubs that weren't on the US release.

If its a series I really want I might risk the single dvd's but I got burned recently with the Beck dvd's I bought the collectors edition and managed to get dvd's 1 - 4 only to be told by up1 that they aren't printing 5 and 6 anymore only the boxset which f##ked up my collection. In the end I bought the boxset so I could see the end of the series, now watching ebay for some cheap dvd's to complete the collection

That was released more than 10 years ago. Try again.

And as Fudce says, don't moan about hentai being cut.

Non-anime related but the UK 'uncut' version of 'Last House on the left' is shorter than the original version AFTER it was cut by the BBFC. So the uncut version has less footage than the original release that was cut? Err?

Why the hell not? What kind of argument is that - Just because you expect something to be cut we should accept it? :?

Nothing should be cut. Nothing should be forcibly rated. The BBFC can go f*ck themselves with rusty glaives, not only for restricting freedom in a supposedly free country, but for making media more expensive to release here as a result of their existance.

Kindly point out where I moaned about it, as opposed to simply giving an example?

That, & I fail at accurately interpreting the meaning of 'decade'. XD Or perhaps not. Urotsukidoji was released (& remember, you said released, not made) in this country on DVD in 2001, which is less than ten years ago, & thus within one definition of 'the last decade'. The other definition refers to blocks of ten years each according to the year number, with 1990-2000 as the last decade, while 2000-2010 is the current decade. Urotsukidoji parts 3 onwards were released from 1990 onwards, therefore making me correct by that definition too.

*rides off into the sunset on a golden pwny*

Ok. maybe I'm remembering cuts from the past then - I still check before I buy though :p. Speaking of the regulatory body the BBFC, they always seems to give anime a higher age rating than they would a 'real' program with the same content.

Hear hear!
I shall admit they act in the best of intentions, but for them to be mandatory for the home video market is perhaps protecting the viewers more than is sufficient. I don't know the opinion of them held by our local distributors though.

Having been burned myself with singles being cancelled and never continued again its only boxsets for me, unless a series in singles has completed releaseing and is still available. Isn't the BBFC being restructured, or getting changes in its regulatory remit?

Return of the Overfiend ep 3 was actually first released in 1994, subbed and cut by over 6 mins. Previous decade, not last decade. So, cut anime from the last 10 years that isn't Paranoia agent?

And for those whining about freedoms and other such claptrap, you can't walk into any old video shop and buy porn in the mighty US of A. Its also the country that is streaming a cut version of Saki and Charger Girls. And they even cut Elfen Lied when it was shown on US TV. You gotta remember, no BBFC doesn't mean everything is 'un cut'.

I don't seem to remember anyone suggesting you could, or for that matter even mentioning the state of affairs in America. It's not like I'm using America as a benchmark for what 'freedom' should be - they aren't free enough over there either. The choice in the US presumably lies with the distributor with regards to cutting, and with the individual shop with regards to stocking. That's not perfect either (and in a country known for it's moral panics it's perhaps inevitable that certain titles get cut / refused shelf space) but it's a hell of an improvement on being forced to pay a mandatory ratings board to rate / cut anything you want to release.

You didn't not clarify that it had to have been first released though. Therefore my given example of a re-release on a new formet; DVD; still stands. :D You'll have to word things very precisely to beat me! :D

Unless I REALLY badly want a series and can't wait for a set/ don't know if a box set will be released, I usually go for complete sets.

I'd DEFINITELY prefer complete sets. Less space, MUCH more reasonable (£75 total for the 3 volume release of Gurren Lagann is kinda steep) and generally bette presented.
