In part two of his three reviews of Miyazaki classics, Martin Butler has taken a look at the popular "fantasy adventure" Princess Mononoke, out now in the UK and even selling in some online stores for as little as £5.99.
Princess Mononoke is a visually stunning story of the battle between humankind and nature, and probably Miyazaki’s most ambitious story to date. By no means a retread of the Earlier Nausicäa film, Princess Mononoke is dark, beautiful and violent but still conveys an underlying sense of hope in the face of the struggle and conflict. Highly recommended.

My favourite Ghibli by far : love everything about this movie. The fantastic charecters , the beautifully detailed visuals and wonderful animation. I really consider it the best animated movie I've seen :D

My fave anime. The dub titles on the R2 are a little sucky mind. Great characters (and Yakkuru!), great story just... err... great! (I need to sleep, not justify my favorite anime is my favorite anime! ^^)

yeah, i forgot to mention the recurring problem of the dubtitles this time. sorry about the typo in the third paragraph as well, my bad.

The only Ghibli movie with a bishounen character

I think I've had every version of it available, including a video I bought from my local library about 4 years ago

So is the current UK version dubtitled instead of subtitled?

Makes me glad that I imported the US version when it first came out.

I'm intrigued- what does that mean and which character is it?

Best Ghibli film ever IMO.

Definitions of BISHOUNEN on the Web:

The literal translation is Beautiful Boy. Bishounen are found in all types of manga and anime and can be quite masculine, they are not necessarily "effeminate" males but sometimes are. Bishounen are the focus in shounenai or Boy's love manga... see the definition of yaoi.

(bee-sho-nen) The Japanese equivalent of "pretty boy". Bishonen are male characters with soft or sometimes very feminine features. The male cast from Fushigi Yuugi are good examples of bishonen.

Bishōnen (美少年. literally, "beautiful boy") is a specific Japanese aesthetic concept of the ideally beautiful young man. The prefix bi- (美) specifically refers to feminine beauty (bijin, lit. "beautiful person", refers to a beautiful woman.) The bishōnen is typically quite slender and not very muscular, with a tapered chin, stylish hair, and an overall effeminate or androgynous appearance. The aesthetic of the bishōnen began as an ideal of a young homo

Great film; as mentioned in the review it's good that there are no clear good guys and bad guys- makes a change from the standard fare. Think I'll have to watch it again soon.

I have to concur, Mononoke is also my favourite Ghibli film. It's just much more brutal than other Miyazaki films, I love that side of it. The first half of Mononoke is pretty much perfection.

I LOVE MONONOKE! It was my first Ghibli film ever, I love San, she is such a powerfull character and Ashitakas elk is uber, seriously I cry everytime Yakul gets hit by the arrow!

I haven't seen Monoke yet...I will probably see it soon tho. I think they are selling it on DVD at Play.com for about £6.99 so I might get
