I've just posted my review of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Platinum #1, the much lauded renewal of the landmark mecha series, out now from ADV UK.<ul><span class=menu>"If you already hate Evangelion, this release won't change your (frankly crazy) opinions, but then, if you're a massive fan- this is the best Evangelion has ever looked and sounded. If you find yourself somewhere in-between, re-watch you’re older Evangelion DVDs and decide for yourself if you want to check out the latest and greatest versions."</span></ul><a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/viewreview.php?showreview=88">Read full review</a>

I think you pretty much summed it up in that review. i was a little disappointed with the number of extras as well but the improvement in sound and picture quality is amazing. it makes me wish i had a 5.1 surround system, though.

I thought the extras were very good, the commentaries are very enjoyable, heh, I reviewed it nicely with a nice high score too.

Its the video quality that got me...

The video and sound quality is brilliant; it does give the series the quality that it originally deserved.

I only bought it because my previous set of Eva DVDs were a collection of poor quality bootlegs; I have to say though, I wouldn't recommend dishing out another £100 for this, if you already have the Perfect Collection. Unless you really really REALLY want to immortalize this series in its highest possible quality!

The reason I pity you is because you have the Perfect Collection, if you have that, then I could not reccommend getting Eva Plat unless you really love the show. Despite the fact that it is so much better.

I have about 6 of the 8 original Eva DVD's and none are directors cut, so I just scrape by.

Until the next Disc format comes out.

the extras.... Well there is only a limited number of Japanese extras avalible for EVA Plat (from the Renewal release) Some of them ADV cant get anyway (dues to the fact they are from the movies), and one of them (Genesis 0:0) they couldnt get either, DLW (ADVs David Williams) said that they tried to get it but couldnt, over on Animeondvd, so imguessing that Gainx wanted more money for that extra.

They do have some intresing extras coming up though, Animatics (animated storyboards) for 7 episodes, a "mythogy of Evangelion" feature (which i think is ADVs own inhouse version of genesis 0:0), a couple more commentries, and a feature on Evangelion figures, hosted by Tiffany Grant (the English VA for Asuka).

I wish more companies made there own extras, Geneon hardly have any extras, from either side (US or Japanese) while Bandai seem to only bother getting extras on Big releases

it's good to hear that there are more extras in the pipeline, at least. i've always wondered how the rights to Eva got split between ADV and Manga Entertainment in the first place...

Apprently, the rights to the movies would have cost the same as licensing 3 or 4 other series. ADV decided to go that route instead.
At least they went to Manga, who decided to try and get all the dub cast back, whicth Geneon would NOT of done.

Perhaps, but ADV haven't exactly gone out of their way to utilise the current format to its full potential. Some of the later Plantinum releases apparently still have only 3 episodes apiece.

I'm in a bit of a silly situation right here. I checked out Evangelion at beginning of last year (when I suddenly just decided to check out anime in general), and immediatly put it down under "i'm going to get this series". I looked at the DVDs, and was none too impressed with how stingy the later volumes are. Then I figured "they'll put a box-set out for this sooner rather than later". Perfect Collection arrives and a month later, it's a case of "not-as Perfect collection". I currently don't know whether to start buying the Platinum DVDs or wait around for a Platinum box-set. Poop.

The animatics take up alot of space ya know :p

(seriosuly, they are the length of a episode)

I suppose, but animatics are classic "we don't know what to put on the disc so we'll put these on" material (see: any Buena Vista release of Ghibli films ^^). I really doubt they'll have enough extras on the 3 Episode discs to justify having put so few episodes on them... Well, unless by "justify" I mean "to the people who want to make as much money out of this cash cow" rather than "to the people who buy the DVDs"

Eva Platinum is tempting, but having only bought the original DVDs last year, I just don't feel ready to 'upgrade' yet. Maybe I'll just wait for the "Eva Titanium" edition to come out. :)
