Recommended adult anime... no i dont mean hentai...

Hokum

Straw Hat Pirate
Which anime would you recommend to another adult. I'm refering to Seinen, but there are many series which are branded shonen which i'd also recommend.

Some i'd recommend for example.

Ergo Proxy
Moribito
Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex

ADULT eh? Sorry - anyhow..

Monster
Planetes
Berserk
Black Lagoon

More mature series are honestly few and far between the piles of shonen and harem comedy series - not that I don't like some of those, but occasionally I do crave something that doesn't feature a cast of angsty 14 year olds with superpowers.

Anything by Mamorou Ohsii (follow the link,Yugo the Negotiator
Samurai X (Kenshin) Movies, Mushishi, Area 88, Moyashimon,
Legend of Galactic Heroes (
if you have a few months to spare), Skull Man, REC, Denou Coil.
Maybe a few more if i think a bit longer. Also you may want to rewatch some shows that may be considered childish (Marcoss) with more adult eyes.

Serial Experiments Lain, even though the main character is a kid it is a very deep thought provoking series. Noein could fall into this as well.

Seinen shows and films aren't necessarily all that I'd recommend to an adult. Many titles accessible to less mature viewers (which may include angst-ridden teenage characters and harem elements) can still be enjoyed by adults to an equal and sometimes greater extent than they can be by younger fans. Hopefully we're all aware of that.
If we're limiting ourselves to works that require a certain amount of maturity to be appreciated though, I could suggest:

Ghost in the Shell 1+2
Patlabor the Movie 1+2
Jin-Roh
Magnetic Rose
Makoto Shinkai's films

I'm sure plenty others are appropriate, but these are the only titles I've seen and enjoyed which fit such a requirement.

Anything Satoshi Kon, Makoto Shinkai or Mamoru Oshii for starters =)

Gankutsuo, Kino's Journey, Haibane Henmei, Samurai Champloo, Noir, Wolf's rain and Twelve kingdoms!

Now on to the reasons.
Satoshi Kon - Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent are master pieces. They are great stories that deserve several viewings, as you can always notice something new every time you do.

Makoto Shinkai is beautyful and poetic 5 cm per second is melodramatic, but is difficult not to be touched by it / Voices of a distant star also have a very interesting setting. Great romantic stories.

Mamoru Oshii well, ghost in the shell is a revolution in scifi. In any medium. Patlabor is also a great movie.

Gankutsuo is Gonzo at its best! It's the anime adaptation of The count of Monte Cristo with some of the most beautiful animation. The sound track is also epic.

Kino's Journey, Haibane Henmei - laid back series. The first is the episodic accounts of Kino's adventures as she travels through the world. Haibane henmei is well, absurdly hard to classify, but well worth seeing.

Samurai Champloo, Noir, Wolf's rain - these are stylish, great technically (animation, sound, music) and very fun. The first is samurai's with Hip hop, despite what you may think at the first time, it actually blended these two almost opposite concepts well. Noir is your typical girl with guns series, fun to watch. Wolf's Rain is your futuristic fantasy with some post armageddon settings.

Twelve kingdoms - What can is my favorite of all time!
It's your traditional cape and sword tale, told the chinese way. Everything about it is perfect except one thing. It hints on a story arc that unfortunately was never animated =(

Most of them have been mentioned but I'd suggest Battle Angel Alita/GUNNM myself. Great series, very... cyberpunk. Read the manga though, anime is great but it's only two OVA episodes which will leave you wanting more.

I've seen the OVA and, although certainly not bad, I feel it could have been improved in certain places. The music, animation and setting were commendable, yet emotional scenes (especially the climax) are best described as watchable as opposed to moving. The short story was altogether quite an accessible one though; I think teenagers with no aversion to violence would receive it very well.

gunbuster... kinda
That 'kinda' is quite a big one. As epic a tale as it tells, it might be a little cheesy (for want of a better word) for older viewers' tastes. Especially if you consider all shouting of the move names and the jiggling...

On a related note, is there any way to buy GunBuster these days for a reasonable price?

Most of these have already been mentioned:

Paranoia Agent
Planetes
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
maybe...Last Exile

Even though theres comedy in most of them, they all have pretty serious stories at the core. I think thats what would give them adult appeal
