ive never played one.... ever! by that i mean games like final fantasy, encharted arms, eternal sonata

but now i kinda wanna get one and see whats the fuss is all about... i havent done much research on the matter.

recommend one? i have a ps3... im think i mite pick up final fantasy 7 for a bit of retro and also i remember a friend of mine playing it years ago and i liked the characters... any1 recommend any more up to date ones? thanks

There aren't many out for the PS3 unfortunately, not until Final Fantasy 13 comes out which is supposed to be out around March time but Square Enix are famous for missing release dates so it probably won't be out til the summer or maybe even autumn 2009

If you have a PS1 or PS2 I recommend Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 10 they are amazing games, i still play all of these. The Star Ocean games are also really well put together RPGs too

My fave PSP rpg's would have to be Breath of Fire 3 and Final Fantasy 7 Core Crisis.

PC - would have to be Neverwinter Nights (I prefer the first game and add-ons to the 2nd game), Diablo 2 (old but highly addictive), Final Fantasy games and Far Cry 2 (its a mix of rpg and 1st person shooter)

Xbox 360 I would have to recommend Fable 2 (can be played over and over again so many different routes through this game) and Infinite Undiscovery

On the PS3 you're kind of limited really at the moment...

Enchanted Arms and Folklore are probably the closest you'll find to proper JRPGs.

In this generation of consoles it seems that it's the XBox that's getting all the RPGs instead of the Playstation.

As other posters have mentioned, the PS3 is not spoiled for choice when it comes to JRPGs. But none of the "current-gen" titles, in my opinion, compare favourably to the best on PS2, so I recommend that you look there. Final Fantasy X, Persona 3 FES, Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time, and Suikoden V are highly recommended.

On PS3 you can pick up Eternal Sonata now (i think or at least you should be able to import the amercian version)

Also on PS2 any of the Shin Megami Tensei games (so that's Lucifer's Call, Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3 FES) that's along side the choices above i may add

Final Fantasy X is where I started with RPGs, and the genre is now my absolute favourite. I think that would be a good place to start to start for all budding RPG gamers :]

Final Fantasy X is a good start. I still enjoy it to this day despite the dodgy voice acting. I don't really get the hate with the Sphere Grid, but meh.

I would definitely recommend Persona 3: FES. I still think it's an enjoyable game. YOU CAN DRESS UP THE GIRLS IN MAID SUITS 8D It can't get any more awesome than that? Oh and the school activity, being friends and collecting Persona is very enjoyable.

If you do end up liking the game, then there is Persona 4 coming out to Europe in Spring 2009 and Square Enix is the new publisher instead of Koei.

well depending on the backwards compatability you could try
-Disgaea
-Wild Arms
-Gusts Atelier Iris Series
-.hack series
-odin sphere
-Valkyrie Profile
-Tales of series (if you could find one ><)

So, you're saying you never played Pokémon? Classic RPG there :)

Pokémon is a lot of fun, but it's not really an RPG in the conventional sense. It's far too basic and simplistic. Besides, skikes is looking for games he can play on his PS3 :p

I would also suggest that you check out Final Fantasy XII - it's by far the best game I've ever played, and was universally acclaimed by critics upon it's release (it got 40/40 in Famitsu, Game of the Year from Edge among other less presitiogus accolades and maintains a consistently high raiting on MetaCritic) so it's well worth at least giving it a try. It's very cheap now, too - so what are you waiting for?! :p

Committed PS2 JRPG'ers should check out Ar Tonelico. It was never released in the UK, but the European PAL version is in English, both Text and Voice Acting (though you can switch it to Japanese voices if that's your thing). Amazon.Fr has a few copies at least in the New & used section.

Picture a cross between one of the later turn based Final Fantasy's and a Dating Simulator where all of the girls are incrediably powerful sorcerers. Throw in an item crafting system like Star Ocean or Atelier Iris and blend with a dash of fantastic vocals-based soundtrack.

The other topic he started was because he couldn't use BC on the PS3 =p

Erm, PS3 wise i couldn't say, but Eternal Sonata is always a good one to look into, and Last Remnant should be getting released onto it as well some time soon(the 360 version was released earlier). If you have a PS2, then Persona 3 FES is good, same with FFX and Disgaea 1 + 2.

@Ammy, you sure Persona 4 has a release for Europe now? i still haven't found one, not that it matter since i have the US version coming.

well blow me down, sorry for the pointless info skikes :p

Hmm, I have a 360 and was thinking about trying/getting into RPG's. All this talk about Eternal Sonata makes me want it badly, especially with it being only £9.99 on play.com o_o

Buy it :p you could certainly do worse for that price.

Final Fantasy VI is all you need. The best Final Fantasy game, and before anyone comes back in to disagree go and actually complete the game, seriously.

Eternal Sonata? The game play is so amazingly fun and addictive with awesome cutesy characters and a colourful world, but the story is absolutely awful, generic as hell. Still well worth it for £10 though, just don't expect easy achievements on the 360 though.

Btw first two generations of Pokémon were very basic not having much of a story, but third gen turned it all around, the games mechanics are very advanced for third generation onward. Such as IVs and EVs as well as natures which either help or hinder a pokémon, making the possible outcome for a pokémons stats endless.

Not trying to be funny but Famitsu are hardly worthy of being listened too, 40/40 for Nintendogs? 39/40 for GTA IV? 38/40 for Assassin's Creed? Oh lawd.

A wiser man than I once said there are two types of gamers - Ones who are convinced a certain Final Fantasy is the best, and ones who haven't played any of them.

It's depressingly regular to discover people falling into the first option who haven't played any of the others except their personal favourite however.

It says so by Square-Enix themselves.

I'll point that out, but Famistu are NOT WORTH listening to for reviews. As many reviewers in the west point out, multiple gaming companies have some form of hold over them (possibily a close relationship with Famistu). A bad review can affect that, which is why there's no point in listening to them.
