Hi I'm looking to buy a difinative book/encyclopedia on Anime Movies/Series etc and seeing as there is a vast selection out there I was wondering if anyone here could tell me which one to go for.
Thanks for any help, H

Heh, I bet everyone clicked on the link expecting to respond saying "It's manga! Not anime books!"

Jonathan Clements... for some reason I see his name everywhere.

Jonathan Clements

for some reason i really don't like him.
reason 1 - his name is mentioned almost everywhere in the uk industry

reason 2 - i saw him singing some japanese song on Saiko exciting years back and frankly, if anyone saw that, their fists would have clenched and be pre-pared for a full contact punch on him. it was that annoying.

reason 3 - the way everyone mentions him in the uk industry is as if he is a saviour or the only top guy in the biz. and i am pretty sure there ought to be more people out there.

reason 4 - all i see him is as an author of an somewhat old anime encyclopedia (and i flicked and read some of it, and wasnt all that fasinating, you could find 2/3 of it from a few websites.

(ok i think reason 4 was a bit extra, but i just find him annoying)

it may sound rude or somewhat unfair, but its been annoying me for years -____-

(preparing for all the counterattack posts from the Jonathan Clements fans)

Reason 2 i missed. But yeah he is annoying. Especially his face. Also his entery in the encoyopedia for 'Cowboy Bebop' basically says its ****. which i don't like

i think he is one of the staff, editors, what have you on the Neo Magazine. if you do read it or have an issue (check the first few pages, and they usually have a pic of some othe staff.)

Speaking of NEO, another one of their writers by the name of Paul Gravett (apologies if it's misspelled) has done a book or two on manga and how it's viewed in the West and so on.

Helen MacCarthy has written a great film-by-film book on Hayao Miyazaki but it was written before Spirited Away so is in need of an update! Otherwise it's a really good overview of his stuff.

I got bought the Anime Encyclopedia last year, its basically an A-Z of anime released since 1917, has a short description on each amine, some are a paragraph some are longer depending on whether or not it has a special following or is of some importance to the anime industry

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1880 ... s&v=glance

I Have added the link to it on Amazon

Thanks McIcy I was looking at this one but I might wait as Play.com has a larger paged revised edition listed to come out in December

No worries, always happy to help. If you can wait then its always best to hold out for updated version. Might be worth checking the book out on amazon.com incase there is an earlier release date for the US
