Question about Hack roots

unellmay

Vampire Ninja
Is it possible to watch hack roots as a stand alone?

I've seen hack sign and liked it
And read the manga set after the original games
Didn't really bother with the game thanks to a massive spoiler at the end of sign

But is it possible to watch hack roots by its self?
You know with out being force to buy a set of games and stuff afterwards?

.hack//Roots is a prequel to the .hack//G.U. games, which means you can watch it on its own. However, it ends just after the start of the first game, leaving viewers unable to see the story through to conclusion without buying the games.

I wouldn't recommend watching it because Roots was created after the first game and is just a cash-in, adding very little and being very boring as a result, including lots of terrible staring contests. It also has a limited amount of animation and fairly awful music.

.hack//SIGN is different: it's a standalone story, one with very few connections to the original .hack games. Rather than a poor attempt at milking the .hack name, it's actually a very good series, the only real flaw being that it's slow moving - too slow for some. And, unlike Roots, it has an amazing soundtrack.

In short, instead of wasting your time with Roots, you should move straight onto the .hack//G.U. games. The games are cinematic, meaning you'll get plenty of story whilst plating through them.

Except that playing the games is very difficult, since it has never been released in Europe.

Really depends what your into, could you give us some of your favorite genres?:). But if you mean something like .HACK,then I'd say the closest thing is the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series. The games are easy to get hold of in the U.K and there is an anime too(although probably only available subbed).

I prefer subbed and I have those games :D

Pretty much anything really
I'm not too picky

Though my preferred genres are something with action or comedy

Paying money for a NTSC PS2 or going down the chipped/swap magic path isn't difficult. I don't do difficult. Anything that just requires money to be thrown at it isn't a a real problem.

The games are vastly superior to a 20+ episode series where sod all happens. Everything you need to know gets revealed in the games, and the games actually end the story.

One thing I neglected to mention: .hack//G.U. Trilogy. It's an 80 minute CG movie, retelling the story of the games. It's rushed and changed a lot, but it's worth watching. At the very least, it's better than Advent Children in the CG movie adaptations/continuations of game stories league.

Fairly certain Beez licensed this a few months ago. No word on a release yet however...

I'd buy G.U. in a second if someone risked a UK release, but no one will. :(

I was under the impression that the actual games were due out here in september, although it's highly doubtful. For those interested in the original .Hack series of games, they can still be found on Amazon if I'm not mistaken :)

The games will never be released over here now. With the PS2 dead, releasing a niche trilogy wouldn't be wise. I don't think the original, 50hz, 10-20 hour .hack games sold well over here.

Here's the first eight minutes of .hack//G.U. (it has a very long opening) and a filler fight from the movie:
