Almost a year after the sad passing of Satoshi Kon news has emerged that production of Dreaming Machine has been halted.

This was to be the final work of Satoshi Kon, the director of classics like Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent, because he knew he was terminally ill. Yume Miru Kikai (The Dream Machine) was thought to be on track for completion due to detailed plans left behind but Madhouse founder Masao Maruyama announced the bad news at the Otakon 2011 where he indicated that production on the work had stopped due to the poor financial health of the studio. 600 shots had already been animated but there were still 900 to go before the movie was completed. Maruyama has renewed his commitment to finishing the fim one day.

My first thought was "I wonder if this is due to Madhouse's financial situation", and sure enough there it is. Depressing. Let's hope the studio's fortunes change and we see the film sooner rather than later.

No! =( Terrible news. I'm surprised Madhouse is in such dire straits when almost everything seems animated by them these days :p

Still, I really hope the fact it was Kon's last work will mean they will find a way to see it done.

Rubbish! It's a sad state of affairs indeed. Really would be a shame if this film was never completed, as its should turn out to be a fitting memorial to Kon's life and work.

Eh what?!

Madhouse havent had a hit TV series since Deathnote, though Summer Wars was a huge hit.

They've been working on lots of stuff aimed at Western audiences (Redline, Marvel adaptations) without any appeal to the core markets (i.e. otaku/fujoshi) in Japan.

They also don't make much when compared to JC Staff, Sunrise, or Production IG. They're at the 1 show per season level.

Ah ok, probably just a coincidence that much of what I've been watching has been Madhouse :p (Isn't Bakuman madhouse?)

Don't know how popular it was, but I'm currently watching Kobato which is by Madhouse.
